Well it depends on how mch u want to spend.
But new pistons and balancing and a line bore are a good starter.
Then a new cam theres lots to choose from for the xflow, then depending on what head u have the mods go on.
But the advantage is things like extractors are dirt cheap and so are the old lynx manifolds E bay is full of that sort of stuff.

higher comp is good, but sometimes these engines ping fairly easily so be a little careful,, mine was running 9.5:1, im sure you could go a little further if u wanted too. mine was running acl 5cc dishes

as for cam, makes some calls, camtech over here is good, or crow or any of the others,, tell them what your doing and what you wanna achieve, they should be able to help you out..

Check out tighe cams website for a small solid cam.
http://www.tighecams.com.au/
Im looking at getting an 883C cam to throw into my 250 to replace the crow 14892 in my motor at the moment.
Im running a rebuilt 250 crossflow in a corty. 600 double pumper, extractors and a crowcam. Did have a ported head :S untill i dropped number 5 exhaust valve. Motor is now running a stock C2 or E2 head.
Car is fitted with a minispool and 2.92 diff gears and easily pulls 2nd cog, and 3rd if i rip on the shifter. Used to pull like a freight train through to about 5300, with the stock head, now only pulls strong to about 4200.

I'd recommend starting out with an early XF injected head, and have the ports cleaned up, mainly around the short turn radius and the valve guide boss. dont use to big a carby, a 500 holley 2 barrell would be plenty big enough for most people. pick up an aftermarket manifold to suit, redline or cain, or get an adapter plate to bolt to the standard manifold.
Use a 250 crank, 200 rods and the special ACL pistons to suit. Dont forget to get the rods prepped and fitted with arp rod bolts. Get a new standard volume oilpump but bump up the oil pressure a bit. try shimming up the relief spring or perhaps the moroso 99psi clevo spring will fit..?

My motor has 100 psi cold, 80 psi hot, and can get down to 60 when held at high revs for a while. I also run more oil in the sump than ford specifies.
