a really n00bish question im sure, but how can i set the base idle, when i cant get it to run? to keep the motor running, i have to give it some gas, otherwise it still just dies on me - and it still requires the accel to be flat to the floor to start too... i thought that was the case with the later dizzy, as even popping the cap off, it looked different internally from the one on the fd. any idea why it wants to chew out rotor caps too? i think i might need to get a new dizzy cap as well, as when i looked at it, it had evidence of arcing on the undersides, but its not as bad as i have seem some on my prev fairlanes.

that screw on the side of the T/B screw it out and it'll increase the idol, is the auxiliary air valve connected? (goes where the fuel pump does on the carby models)
excessive igniotion votlage will cause issues if the car isent setup for it |

aux air valve... not sure i know what you are talking about - il go out and take a couple of pics of it and post them up, that might help a bit more than me trying to explain where what goes where.

ok, heres the pics, sorry if they dont show what your asking about, but the outside light wasnt throwing much light in the way of picture taking.

ok that pipe on the back of the plenum in the 1st pic, follow it down and make sure it hooked up to the aux air valve (as i said mounts where the fuel pump usualy does) the hose and a connector to the loom should be connected

yep all is in - i assume the connector you are talking about is the one that comes out of the fuel injector loom? between cycls 3 and 4 - this one is plugged in. i know i havnt gotten that one in the wrong place, as an injector loom wont reach this point that the plenum hose comes off - the loom is too short. il have a double / tripple check when its light enough to be able to see what im doing tomorrow.

new problem...
we have spark, we have timing (its lined up for TDC @ number 1 now) we have fuel getting up to the injectors (after running out of fuel that is and putting more back in) we have a good strong battery as well, but she will not fire! cranks hard, the fuel pump primes and is definatly getting fuel up to the rails - pulled the line off the rail to check that one. all vacume lines are in the correct place as well just quite difficult right now :S any ideas??

ive had this same problem twice with the fairlane lol 1st time was the AFM had packed it in 2nd time the computer earth wire wasent connected and it was flipping out!, to check injector pulse, get a LED and connect it to one of the injector leads and make sure it pulses while cranking

just went out and checked the injector plugs / wires for 'activity' with the multimeter - all six of them are firing / pulsing. double checked the spark plugs while i was at it, interestingly, i seem to have an intermittent problem here - lead carrys the spark, but the plug doesnt 'spark.' they are the ones that where in the ZL Fairlane head i transplated with the fuel rail, so i know they all work. They are getting towards the end of thier service life - but they ran fine in the ZL.. where is the earth lead for the computer? the car was 'running' with convincment the other day, the only thing that has changed since then, is we have flushed the oil (yes we finally changed the oil - sounds better even when its only cranking over) and we adjusted the timing back to where we think its ment to be.. unless in the back to where we think its ment to be... we have managed to turn it 180...? atm, she floods easy - but doesnt think of kicking over and running... when its cranking over, the oil pressure guage in the dash steadily rises to a nice healthy spot just north of halfway on it. getting quite confusing - as it fired yesturday, but doesnt want to know about it today!

computer earths right at the battery (the 2 black leads from the computer are BOTH earths) easy way to tell, is remove the plug from the ECU, and the 2 end connectors (opposite to the end the loom exits) should both have continuity to a ground, if not start there

sorry - just need to clarrify something in my earlier post.
the spark plugs DO fire - but sometimes i get just smoke and no spark. more spark than smoke tho when i was checkin them... had a wander outside and checked the battery, i have 2 black - yet somewhat small and thin wires with connectors that attach to the neg terminal of the battery - il have to check when its light tho, so see if they are grounding out (should hit the landlords up for a double lockup garage, with lotsa lighting for night time car work! I dont like my chances on that one tho)

i have the big negative lead from the block, one individual black small wire from a bundle, and what looks like 2 of the same sized black leads that have been joined together - looks rather dodgy actually, fiddled with the wires, and feels kinda brittle / loose / bad. probably with all the removing and reinstalling of the battery between the fd and zl (used the battery to drain the zl fuel tank via the fuel pump), so im guessing things have come loose there. tomorrow il look at making these good connections again - hopefully this will make the damned car START!?

yea fingers crossed mate, if there poor connectins that will explane it, mine had about 1 strand left holding it on there and was corroded to crap so i stripped it back further back and re-wired it
