Hi,
Can anyone tell me how or where I can find info on Identifying the Engine codes on an XE Falcon Vin Plate. I have looked at a few sites but all omly seem to List the GTs up to XB.
I am Buying an XE Roller and want to know what engine it was originaly. I think the engine code is Y car has nine inch diff in it and Trans code is L which on other falcons means Manual 4 speed. Has 5.8 badges on front guards but anyone can put them on. Any help much apreciated.

Regards Darryl...

The last Falcon to be fitted with a 9" diff from factory was an XC.....XD onwards were all Borg Warners.
The 351 powered vehicles had rear disc brakes, and 28 spline centres.
I actually have a Ford book on the matter....but I can't find it at the momment....it's still packed away.

Engine code for V8 351 in an XE is 'T'.....4sp is is 'L'.
engine codes for XE are as follows :
L = 3.3 med CR NSW
V = 3.3 high CR
X = 4.1 high CR NSW
W = 4.1 high CR
B = 4.9 high CR NSW
P = 4.9 high CR
T = 5.8 high CR.

Model codes are as follows :

18233 = GL sedan
18243 = GL sedan Taxi
18237 = Fairmont sedan
18238 = Fairmont Ghia sedan
18263 = GL wagon
18267 = Fairmont wagon
45271 = std ute
45273 = GL ute
45281 = std van
45283 = GL van

Gearbox codes are as follows:

N = man 3sp col change
L = man 4sp flr change
K = man 5sp flr change
R = auto 3sp col change
B = auto 3sp flr change

Thats all I got.

Hi the car is built april 83 engine code is Y and Trans is L so it is four speed but engine code does not match the codes that were posted on this thread. I rang ford and after a bit of a wait they got back to me and said it is a factory V8 four speed and lsd rear but did not tell me what kind of diff. The car does have a factory nine inch. It is disc brake and lsd. Who knows but at least its an 8.

Not a chance in the world its a factory 9" diff.
They didnt even make them in the Coil spring setup that an XE is.
Post some pictures of the diff. Maybe your getting your diffs mixed up.

Does the body number on the left hand strut tower end in a C or a K?
That is your answer 100% if its a factory V8 or not. Being an 83 model Id doubt it since V8 production finished November 82 in XE's.

Speeking from experiance, history would have Y Code as a 302. Clevo of course. If the chassis No ends in a K Then thats what you would have. As for a 9 Inch. You could well have one, but it didnt leave Broadmeadows that way. You Also say that its a 83, Model. So if the chassis No ends In K.............. I dont know what to tell you. Do all the numbers Plates Chassis engine align... It doesnt seem to all fit. Sorry Bro, But keep digging There were all sorts of rumours in the day that they were still fitting Police cars and the like ??? Dunno. Doubt It. Regards Darren. PS This is not the first time I have heard of this though.

Hi Diff is nine inch but put on pic anyway, also pic of ID Tag. Ford have told me it is factory 4.9 but that is contrary to what you guys believe the C means. so I will try ford again see if I get a different answer. and yes if you look at other models Y is 302 so its got me confused.

Regards Darryl...

The "C"indicates a 6 cylinder car. As for the Y.... well ya got me. Historically this was always a 302. L obviously a 4 speed. Y ?????????? Dunno XE. Someone must know. Since 1970 Y was a 302. its a 33, so 4 door peasant pack (Model No).

None of those numbers make sense, I have the Factory workshop manual "the bible" for the XE's, and none of those numbers exist, paint code is sno white, that's the only thing that makes sense. I would suggest that it was perhaps a Police vehicle, or a Ford executive driven vehicle, built to custom specifications. As other people have said, the "C" makes me think it's a 6 cylinder car. Transmission code indicates 4 speed manual. It wouldnt have let Broadmeadows with a 9", however that diff is definatley a 9" I'll hazard a geuss that it had the following specifications, but I'm not 100% sure:

Engine: 4.1 HC 6 cylinder
Transmission: 4 speed manual floor shift
Paint: Sno White
Trim: Charcoal
Diff: 2.77 BW LSD

I called ford help line and did a search before I brought the car. They told me it was 302 4 speed snow white gunmetal trim with tinted band in wind screen with 4 wheel disc lsd. could not tell me what diff was fitted. I thought the numbers were a bit strange and some of you guys said C meant 6 cylinder so I called them again and requested another search and this time they told me it come up unknown. I then told them I had done a previous search and then they had another look and give me the same specs. I pushed the point about the engine code being a Y and they told me it definately means 302. I think there is something odd about the ID tags and would love to know if the car is special in some way. anyway maybe someone knows where I could go or who to call to solve this little mystery.

Solved it yet? As Gab already indicated, looks like Y = 4.1L EFI in a 1983 XE

No never solved it I gave up. As I said the ford help line are adamant that it is a 302. I Have decided to use the car as a club car and race it at simmons plains raceway here in Tassie. So it doesnt realy matter. It would be a shame to wreck it if it is indeed a special car in some way. I did think originaly it may be worth restoring if I could find out its true heritage.

Me thinks the same thing, it might have been a 6 cylinder 4.1 EFI engine.
