Hey people, as i am building a Tickford 4 litre XY, i am leaving it collum auto as the i.d tag says. now bein that the xy was a 3speed auto i have gone to a 4 speed auto, i am wanting to know if an XG steering collum will fit straight into my XY. the fact that the XY has 1st,2nd,Drive on the collum and the XG has 1st,2nd,3rd,Drive. The Auto is out of an EF but the collum auto on them is different. hepl would be appreciated, thanks Sean

Why? The T-bar would fit really easily, and is a lot nicer to drive.
The late model column wont fit easily, it is longer than the XY one, and will have a different spline at the end. Plus you will have to use most or all of the EF wiring harness to make it work.
Plus it wont match the rest of the dash/interior of the XY.
At the end of the day anything is possible, but it seems like a lot of work for a small improvement.
Good luck. :D

Kinda. But if your changing the motor and gearbox, and the paint colour, why are you worried about what it says on the ID tag? Does the tag say you have to keep the drum brakes on the front? Or the bench seat? If you are worried about rego, they will be a lot less worried about it being changed to a t-bar than if you have modified the steering. Brakes and steering mods are the hardest things to get past an engineer.....

hey mate, its like, the id tag codes say 6 cyl,3speed auto, green, bench, fairmont, the brakes are disc on front. so wat im doin is, updating the 250 pre crossflow staright 6 to a 4l injected 6 with an auto 4 speed instead of the 3 speed, the id tag code is saying an olive green but im keeping it green but a different shade, so im trying to keep it as the id tag says but different style, do u get where im coming from?

I am not quite 100% on this but it couldn't be that hard to transplant columns only drama would be concerning the whole rack vs steering box. (that had steering boxes right)

XGs dont have steering racks...

i reckon an XG column will fit..... OR try fitting the selector window(the thing with PRND321) from the XG to the XY column...

im sure that works ive seen it done on an XD ute that had the 4sp auto..... clipped straight on

yeh the xy has a steering box, so r u sayin just clip on the selector plate on top of the colum? but that doesnt lock in into gear. isnt it something inside the colum that keeps it in that gear?

when the column shifter is disconected from the auto it just moves freely inside the column.
