WHS. The head bolts are torque to yield...or something along those lines. Only need to be tightened once. Though you can re-tighten the exhaust and inlet bolts, some might come loose the first time round. phong =P~

heating and cooling of the motor and settling of the new gasket may cause uneven tension on the head bolts. That is the theory anyway. Certainly hasn't caused any problems by doing it, but i have no idea whether it was really necessary.
If others are sayin no then i wouldn't waste time with it when i have to do it again...

is your mechanic an old school mechanic?? your suppose to re torque head bolts by nipping them up so to speak. not un doing them and doing them back up that defeats the purpose of re tensioning them.. but as others have said you dont need to re torque the had bolts on a i6 falcon as they are torque to yield bolts.. now you risk early failure of the head bolts and gasket because you have undone them and done them up again(stretched the bolts). they are only suposed to be torqued once.. |

U dont re-use head bolts!
they are Torque to Yield bolts.......they lose their Yield strength. U have to use new ones each time.

with the head bolts you only torque them up once. but some cheap head gaskets need to be retensioned after a tank of fuel. im my view just spend the extra $$$ an get a monotorque one.
btw my mate changes heads on his i6s an never changes headbolts lol

bump
old thread but figured this would be the best place to get advice :p now ive never ripped the head off a 4l engine before, so i need some advice about how f**k this really is so i pulled the head off to find this ![]() because of this ![]() ![]() ![]() now i assume these are supposed to be holes to allow water to pass, how these have been blocked i have no idea! would the cooling system have operated normaly with these blocked up? ![]() and the state of my head! (yes the cam is still in in this pic) ![]() is any of this abnormal looking to the extent of say buying a new head or getting a new bottom end together?

i would be a bit concerned about the rust on those bores..
you could change the head gasket but i cant see the rings lasting long now that the bores are rusted.. |

Was thinking the same thing... How old is this motor and has it been running just before you pulled it out? Engine rebuild time I think. phong =P~

hmm
the engine has done 330,000ks but feels VERY strong, felt/revved/drove brand new basically the engine was running last week, but it broke down in albury with the blown gasket hence why there is some very very light surface rust, id almost call it just coloring, not rust, more a water mark from where the water has dried and left the color of rusty water from the system - it wiped away when i was cleaning out the bores, ill go take a better pic of the engine in a sec id really rather not rebuild it lol worse case scenario is i put the engine back together and it lasts for a few a few months or something which will give me time to save for a bottom end from a wreckers - this is my daily :p

here is a pic after i cleaned the block and wiped the bores
still a lil rusty looking, but bit nicer, i think it should be ok once the engine is back up and running
