i would be a bit concerned about the rust on those bores..
you could change the head gasket but i cant see the rings lasting long now that the bores are rusted..

Was thinking the same thing...

How old is this motor and has it been running just before you pulled it out?

Engine rebuild time I think.

phong =P~

hmm
the engine has done 330,000ks but feels VERY strong, felt/revved/drove brand new basically
the engine was running last week, but it broke down in albury with the blown gasket hence why there is some very very light surface rust, id almost call it just coloring, not rust, more a water mark from where the water has dried and left the color of rusty water from the system - it wiped away when i was cleaning out the bores, ill go take a better pic of the engine in a sec

id really rather not rebuild it lol
worse case scenario is i put the engine back together and it lasts for a few a few months or something which will give me time to save for a bottom end from a wreckers - this is my daily :p

here is a pic after i cleaned the block and wiped the bores
still a lil rusty looking, but bit nicer, i think it should be ok once the engine is back up and running

It'll be fine.
Done a good job on the headgasket, you get bonus points when they blow right through the firing ring!
What you said look like they should be holes, they aren't meant to be, it's all good.
The surface rust on the bores is just from it sitting with a bit of water in the cylinder like you said, mine was exactly the same after I let it sit with a f**k headgasket for like 2 weeks.
Can't be too picky with a 300+k km motor, it'll probably go for another 100,000 now.
What headgasket are you using?

haha awesome, i figured when the car doesnt idle or rev and the water reservoir is emptied within a few minutes, that the gasket was pretty much f**k.

its had some chemiweld through it before as you can see some on the no.1 valves, but other than that everything seems ok.

ill be using this gasket, only because it comes with a complete kit with every other gasket.

i figured if it gets me another 100,000ks id be more than happy!

You should be fine with the permaseal stuff, ive heard they arent too bad but with my experience im not their biggest fan

I used one of those kits but didnt use all of the gaskets, had a few original ford ones which i liked better as some of the permaseal ones dont look too promising, the intake manifold gaskets were pretty thin i thought. Although i did use the permaseal headgasket aswell on mine and about 2 weeks later it started leaking all along the exhaust side of the block  not sure if its gasket related or just the head even though it was machined a few thou before it went back on. Everything was torqued up correctly and that so dont know where i went wrong. Will have to rip the head off again and maybe look at fitting AU headgasket.

well i went to pick a part for a new head
and after searching and searching had a pot luck pick of a head that looked really clean and looked to have new manifold gaskets.
so pulled it off and sure enough its been recently decked and had a brand new looking head gasket!

so any thoughts on the condition of this one? lol
i got there 45 mins before they shut, so got the head off in half an hour and didnt have a chance to look at others!
the inlet valves are a lil bit burned, but the exhaust valves look to be in great condition and there is very little to no corrosion, where as my last head was fooked!

so yah, any thoughts?
have i just wasted $50 lol

i cant get the 2 outer bolts undone from each other!
gotta love it lol

no..
you need to get the bolt out to re-set the tensioner and release it..
if you force it in in its extended form you will probably brake the chain guide and shear the bolt holding the sprocket onto the aux shaft..
