Gday all, Have had abit of a problem with an Au i picked up about a month ago,

2 weeks ago the drive belt went on the AU and part of the rib that broke got wrapped around behind the power steering pulley, managed to unwravel the part of the drive belt stuck in there but now i'm guessing it's blown out an o ring in there as now power steering fluid is getting sprayed everywhere when the car is running, when the car is stopped there is the occasional drip every 20-30seconds straight into the alternator

I'm heading south this sunday for work (2000k trip) and abit concerned, at current i have to top up the fluid every 3-4 days , got a quote from a local mechanic and explained what was happening, he said it's not that easy and they only do reconditioned pumps, $310 for the pump and labor

I ended up buying power steering stop leak, it seems to of slowed the spray but it's still leaking, any ideas on what i should do? really can't afford $310 to get it fixed before i leave, however don't want to risk the possibility of the alternator crapping out on my way south

cheers all

Buy a second hand one from a wrecker. Not reccon, just off a working car. I got one for $40 a while back. Just get out a phone book and call a few to see if they have one in stock and a price. Good luck.

Degrease the pump and confirm where it's coming from - might be the pump, might be the hose connectors, particularly the swivel one.

nah definitley isn't mate, part of the drive belt got wrapped around behind the pulley, assuming it shot out a seal? you can see it pool up on the bottom of the pulley when not running and when running the pulley just sprays it everywhere

and for an extra $10 you can do the swivel nut on the back that snap referred to as they don't last long. Might as well only drain it once.

Apologies for being so vague. I think theres a doco with pictures somewhere on the site though I will elaborate:

On the back of the pump there are two hose fittings, one high pressure, one low pressure. One has a hose with clamp (the low pressure) and the other has a hard line with a swivel nut to allow it to rotate during engine operation (the high pressure side).

These swivel nuts are renowned for failing after a while, I've had to do both my AU and BF, the nut is available from ford though it is a fairly tedious job. It requires removing the entire line from the car, cutting halfway through the nut without hitting the pipe, then splitting the fitting off the pipe. I did mine with an angle grinder though most people choose to use a hacksaw as there is less chance of going too far. After the nut is removed you screw the new nut into the pump and slide the pipe back into it, job done. I believe it's worth doing on almost any pump if your removing it as the one in my BF failed at 80,000kms. Hope this helps.

and another write up here: http://philatwarrimoo.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/replacing-ford-nl-fairlane-power.html

both for difference models but same principal.
