I'd like to replace the transfluid in my EF and EL XR8 autos....just to freshen em up as it hasnt been done for awhile.
Was it the ELs that didnt have the trans dipstick ? Is this nice and easy to change too ? Also anyone know how much i would be expecting to pay for a new or near new radiator as well .... i dont mind paying a bit xtra to get one from ford if it saves all the phone calls and running around. Hi Kev,
Most oil companies make a BTR LE trans fluid. Just makre sure you get the right one - its a unique product designed specifically for the Ford BTR transmission. It will specifically state that its designed for the ford 4 speed electronic autos. Dipsticks were removed somewhere in the EF life so yeah.. the EL most likely will not have one. Ive never worked on an EL myself but IIRC there is a filler plug on the side of the trans. This also denotes the correct level the fluid should be at... i.e. fill it until it reaches the hole. Prob want to replace the filter. Can get a kit (prob through repco?) with new filter and gasket for the pan. Consider doing a complete flush of the trans if it hasnt been done in a while. After replacing the filter, basically disconnect the trans fluid line which goes to the radiator - run the engine for small amounts of time and collect the fluid which comes out. Replace with fresh stuff. Keep doing this until the stuff coming out looks like the stuff going in. Last time I did this, went through quite a lot of fluid so it could be expensive. Much easier when can fill trans through the dipstick!!! I got a new radiator from gman the rad man on ebay. Was $175 delivered (brand new) and has treated me very well. Standard replacement but he can get you 3 core etc if you feel the need. Cheers Martin

Yeah a full flush could end up costing a couple hundred in trans fluid.
If you don't want to bother yourself. Advanced Transmissions in Mitchell did a great job on mine (and installed a trans cooler) for $550 the lot. IIRC the V8's came with a cooler already, so knock off about $300, and that'd be what the service cost

Does running the engine for small amounts of time and bleeding the trans line harm the box ?

I would imagine no more so than running around on an empty box, or expired fluid.
Mine was at the point, where they didn't need to drain it, and it would fall out of gear on sharp left turns. The report came back, the box was fine, needed a new end bush and fluid.

I USE CASTROL (TQ95) OR VAL (95LE) I WAS TOLD TO USE ONE OR THE OTHER BUT THE TQ95 IS THE BEST OF THE TWO

TQ95 is the recommended one as far as i know - repco has a book so just ask someone there...thats what i did. does the 6 have a different auto to the 8?

The 6 has the BTR95LE (depending on year etc) and the 8 has the BTR97 LE. But they both run the same fluid.

And engine one yeah, but it won't have a trans dipstick, unless the trans has been replaced at some time.

EF was the last of the auto trans dipsticks ... afterwards the fluid checking point was on the side of the auto on the driver's side.
I have done auto trans services twice in the last 6 months (mainly because I have done 30,000km in that time with heavy load and towing work). If done regularly it will increase lognevity of the gearbox ... although not that cheap to do ... it's still cheaper than replacing your gearbox due to neglect. I will be looking at getting a stronger internally built box soon for the work ute ... and getting an oil cooler fitted (AUII EGAS UTE). Last fuild change I had "bits" sitting the bottom pan ... also had a leaking overdrive gasket at as well (made it look like my pan gasket was leaking too) ... was a pain ... I thought I fixed it ... and had to take it back again to get the O/D gasket replaced. Last 2 times I used Gulf Western 95LE fuild for the 6-cyl auto gearbox (whatever Cresent Motorsport uses) ... makes it easier ... they have the hand pump and hose to fill the box with ... makes it easier on the hoist as well.
