My btr has been slipping between 2nd and 3rd when cold ever since about a month after I serviced it(12mnths ago), I tried topping it up but level was fine.
But recently its taken much longer for the rough change to dissappear (twice as long)
Am I looking at a dud solenoid or something major like a manual conversion? :)

Sounds like a solenoid. I know this may sound silly but, you HAVE checked the oil and made sure that there is not Auto fluid in it?

If it were me, I would take my car to a trusted Auto bloke in your area and ask him to diagnose it.
I don't know any in your area unfortunately.

My old mans old VX Commodore (auto) did this.. eventually it got so bad that you would put it in 1st hold the revs at 3000 (no brake) and be moving along at 2km/h. Not exactly sure what happened to it (dad got the details, i was too busy laughing ;)) but the Auto specialist ensured us it would be cheaper and easier to throw a second hand box in (luckily the specialists brother just wrote his vx off so scored the box cheap and the specialist fit it) in total it cost $850,

I know this doesnt help you much, if at all, but id probly start shopping for a new box.. or as you thought, manual the b*tch ;)

Yeah no trans fluid in the oil no trans fluid In the coolant. When I dumped the fluid approx 15000km ago it was black and the magnets were chocablock full of what used to be important bits in the trans lol. It appeared nothing had been removed on the gearbox in 150.000km. Sump bolts appeared to have never been removed.
I used the correct valvoline btr specific fluid.

Manual conversion is 1500 just for parts, ,then a manual tune from ford then a new clutch. And thats just a t5z
Id prefer the t56

Thats a rather large sum.. surely to hurt the wallet.. maybe a new (2nd hand) auto box then? I quite like the sportshift in the ba/f's, but its up to you.

As mentioned id get it checked out by a specialist before making a drastic decision. Goodluck mate

ebay want 1700 odd for a rebuilt 4 speed slowmatic trans. So its much of s muchness. 2500 buys a 6 spd auto zf conversion too.

Ok serviced the trans. It was chock full of awesome metallic fluid.
Didn't smell burnt, but still rough downshifts and rough into 3rd gear. Im beginning to think im best to keep driving it until it gives up and go manual seeing as a s5 solenoid replacement is around $500 and the amount of metal this box is dumping seems bad.
Also noticed the bf has a different heat exchanger to the ba to avoid water in the fluid
