I've just discovered that the plug in the back of my diff has been butchered and is pretty much just wedged in there.

Can anyone tell me if just that rear housing of the diff can be replaced without too much hassle?

If the thread is damaged or even stripped, then it can be re-tapped to suit a helicoil, and returned to original size.

2 solutions,

replace the diff cover, drain oil, remove back plate undo hand brake cable and watts link. replace reseal renew oil.

Or

Acquire a XD/XE diff plug its a plastic plug, smear a bit of rtv on it and press it in.

I'll be trying to go with option A there Krytox. Thanks for the detail :)

Option B seems a little dodgy but I gues it'd suit a quick fix if needed

nearly all XD-XF's have a rubber plug.

Try a trip to repco, I believe there is a replacement with a slightly larger thread just for this occasion.
