I have an ef XR8 and i'm looking for a manual conversion.

Do i have to get a V8 gearbox? Will a I6 box work or they don't bolt up?

the v8 boxes are really hard to find that is all

Yes you need a V8 box, they are not interchangable with the I6 versions.

Or you can use a 6 box and for $587 grab a custom alloy bellhousing from castlemaine rod shop. easy as

call some gearbox joynts they should have or know of a manual bellhousing to suit a E series V8. There must be a damaged box that's attached to a good bellhousing somewhere. then just find yourself a box to bolt up.

yeah will keep an eye out

also, i noticed the ratios differ somewhat from the I6 to the V8

Is it a noticeable difference, do i actually need the V8 ratios or it's still fine with the I6?

the ratios are similar enough to get by, if anything i think it'll just give you more acceleration, and a few more revs while cruising.
Though you can easily have the box rebuilt with whatever ratios you want

yeah but v8 boxes have a different length input shaft, so if using an i6 box he needs one specially made to fit an i6 box onto an 8. I'm guessing these don't last long on the second hand market either.

If using an 8 box obviously he doesn't have problem as he can use his.

good point skidder, i didn't think of that..

In your searches if you find a gearbox that has stripped gears that may still be a good option as rebuilding a gearbox isn't hard, though may cost a bit if your paying for it.
