hello, my ef v8 has lost reverse, so i have a perfect 6 cyl auto from an eb wich apparently has been recon'd and i have a dismantled v8 eb auto. just wondering if someone knows what will need changing. so far i know that the output shaft, extension housing and bell housing need changing but im unsure if anything else will. do i need to use the v8 oil pump or input shafts. they look the same to me. i cant really afford a recon box or a 2nd hand auto so i would rather use this 6 cyl box. i dont mind paying a few bucks for new oil and gaskets if i can make something happen. thanks.

It will work, but you have to change the extension housing, output shaft, bellhousing, and I think that's about it the rest should be the same, but keep in mind any parts that ARE different between 6cyl and V8 MUST come from an EB auto and not an EF one, there's not really that much else to consider it should all go together and work pretty easily, also make sure you use an 8 cylinder torque converter.

Input shafts are different.
Pump is different.
Internals of box are different.

Well no, the stock 6cyl box internals can't handle the torque of a stock V8. But, more to the point there's too much work changing the parts to make it fit. The Output shaft is also different as is the extension housing.

ive dismantled an el 6 cyl box and all the internals appear to be the same. all the shafts drums and clutches appear to be identical. im sure if a 6 cyl box can handle the power from a turbo it will handle a stock v8. the only thing i can see being a problem is the oil pump but they appear to be the same aswell. not unless the btr 97le was strengthened and the eb v8 box was the same as the 6 cyl boxes internally. im not worried about the extra work so thats no problem.

Make a good note about the pump though - you will need a matching V8 converter for the I6 box. The one from your EF isnt going to work. The pump shafts etc are different

Actually the metalls used in the V8 and turbo boxes are different. I had an actual list from Ford engineering but lent it to someone years ago and they never gave it back but, suffice to say everything is different. They even said "don't mix the parts up because you think they're all the same THEY'RE NOT"
I don't think it's worth the effort using the 6cyl box knowing all that but, I suppose if it's a stop gap and you're able to do it then why not.

Yes if your ignoring Pete's advice completely.

That said - You may in fact get a whole v8 BTR (EB -> AU ones should work) for less work.
