Hi guy's
As the title says, are the ED and EF BTR's the same beast? My EF wagons trans is fubar  and one out of an ED has become available  (less torque converter and neutral safety switch) Is it a straight swap? And are there any nasty surprises I should expect? Also what's the best way to do the swap? Engine left in or take the lot out?Thanks in advance, Euan.

Yup same same, I just put a good EB box into my EF and it was straight forward, they're externally identical.

You can't interchange the convertors between a BTR 91 (EB) and a BTR 93 (EF) - the convertor throat has a different length.
If your EB box came complete with the convertor - It will bolt in no probs. |

eb and ed btr 4 speed autos are the same so both eb and ed auto will fit ef

The convertor will go in ok, But when you bolt the box on the back of the engine,the convertor will be jammed due to not enough clearance between the driveplate & convertor - and it can crush the pump if you are not lucky! The pumps are different in thickness between the BTR 85-91 (EA EB ED) & the BTR 93 (EF EL AU) - hence the long & short convertor throats. Besides if your original trans has had the gong, and you use that convertor in another box, all the metal & contaminated oil thats inside it will go straight in your new box......Big problems! |

Excellent. Thanks for the info. So I guess my best approach would be to buy a converter to suit the ED trans...... hmmmm high stall anyone???

doesnt the eb - ed box have a dipstick and ef - au or so not? would that be a clearence issue?

Does the BTR 93 have a dipstick tube?
Mines an early '95 model EF with a dipstick tube attached, the Ex's EF is a '94 model which also has one and a mate at work has a late '95 EF Mont and his trans has no dipstick.  Got me wondering if the early EF's had the BTR 91 in them?

I fitted an ED trans to my XH. The original trans had no dipstick, (stupid idea) and the ED has a dipstick. It fits straight in, no clearance probs at all. Just make sure you put the bellhousing bolt thru the dipstick bracket.
