If you ever need to change the gearbox drive gear, i.e. the one that slips over the g/box output shaft (not the speed sensor one) - make sure you get the one intended for the g/box.
Although the BTR auto and T5 manuals have the same amount of teeth, the output shaft diameters are different, and an auto one is a loose fit on a T5 output shaft, and the T5 one is a very tight fit on an auto output shaft.

Now that is very interesting.

When I went to Ford and asked for a speedo gear for a 3.45 diff, having heard it should be black, they gave me a Grey one. At the time I thought, that is fine as this may well be what they call black.

I am running 16" wheels though, and have found my speedo to be a bit optomistic.

The info you have provided shows that there is a Black and a Grey. I think I will see if I can buy a Black one soon.

And this time I will specify one for a T5, if my auto one won't work correctly.

Very Very Interesting.

Cheers
BenJ

As the part numbers tell you, there is a distinct difference between the auto/manual 'output shaft' drive gears.

However this has no effect on the driven gear as they work on both drive gears.

As Ray said, the output shaft on the auto is thicker than a T5. but hopefully no-one needs to replace this part!

Yeah Ben, note 'Drive' and 'Driven'.
Good put together Andrew - people will find this useful.

Here's some more (For EA though):

Diff ---- Trans -- Drive Gear --- Teeth -- Driven Gear -- Teeth -- Color

2.77 - Auto/Man ------- All -------- 8 ------------------------ 19 --- Purple
2.92 - Auto/Man ------- All -------- 8 ------------------------ 19 --- Pink

When I should have got this

3.45 -- 4 Auto --- 16" XE-17271-F -- 23 LH -- Black

Ben

Hey,

Does any of this apply to an AU ute with 5 speed?
I currently have a sometimes speedo.
Sometimes it a speedo, sometimes its not.

I assumes the little plastic gears on the sensor/drive unit have fallen out of love and aren't meshing all the time.
Is it a big job to fix?

I got of my a... and jacked the big girl on stands.
But the driven gear looked schmick.
I couldnt fit my head into the trans tunnel to check the drive gear.
Anyone had any experience or ideas with an occasional speedo.
It seems to come back if I change speeds or gears when it heads to zero.

It kind of makes my fuel economy look really bad and my dodgy business card sized table of revs + gear = speed is not perfect.

Help

you could try by installing a :
P/N: XE-17271-F -- 23 LH -- Black Speedo Gear. ($16)
This should bring it closer.

otherwise you could purchase a Police Instrument cluster:
documents.php?d=14

I have one of these with 172,000k's on the clock for $140
