Apart from the standard T5 which is a as common as dogs balls, what are the other alternatives that will fit into an EF/EL6 cylinder? I know that there is the t56 but i dont have $6000- $8000 dollars to spend on a gearbox. My T5 either needs a rebuild or i buy another different gearbox to suit.

maybe a Celica/Supra 5 speed could be adapted to fit? I've heard they are pretty good gearboxes.

A TKO box? but then again $6000+ again.

andrew i have a HIGH quality LOW MILEAGE, NEVER thrashed auto that you can have :)

perhaps get a BA/BF T5-Z box, newer, smoother, and quieter.

a lot of modified hilux's use Supra boxes coz they are pretty tough

You have a few options for upgrades wihtout having to do conversions. You can have your T5 rebuilt as a T5Z for a little extra. Still uses a T5 housing but has stronger internals (the BA turbos came out with these boxes).

If you want to get really serious you could look at T5 g-force internals. You can build the box pretty much however you want. Pick from different gear ratios, straight or helical cut gears, syncro or dog ring. The gearbox is also virtually unbreakable, rated at around 600hp/500ft-lb on the drag strip.

So if i was to rebuild with a similar combination like you suggested stockstandard, what kind of price roughly would i be looking at? i assume around $2000?? maybe?

A V8 T5, with a suitable input shaft will do the trick nicely, if you are breaking 6 cylinder ones. The helix cut is different to the 6, basically the T5Z spoken of. I have never had a T5 fail yet with some respectable V8's in front of them. Give Mal Wood a call, they looked after me really well.

I think that mal wood charges $2600 T5Z upgrade (changeover).

I would think that a rebuild with g-force parts would be about the same, but that would depend on who you get to install the parts.

A mate of mine just put an old 4 speed single rail behind a XR8 (220kw) Au engine in a Cobra mock up.

The old single rails and toploaders are not bad gearboxes strength wise, but the lack of overdrive doesnt make them all that desirable in a modern street car.

Well the XY had 161.2 RWK going through a C4

Now it's had a cam change,tri'y's double springs,was thinking around 180 now...

vik...how do you think that would go with the Borgie 4 speed in it now

Ooooo yuk, I had a Falcon Borg Warner 4 speed single rail in the Valiant, we had it freshly rebuilt, a fine box for it's age, but f**k putting it in a modern EF.
