I need your opinion…

How much would an EL 5.0L V8 engine (including everything) plus 5 speed manual gearbox cost? (both should be in good and working order - engine should have less than 150,000km on the clock)

How many hours would it take (roughly) to pull out the existing engine and gearbox and replace them with new ones?

Your comments are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I sold my V8 T5 for $1500 if that gives you an indication. It wan't even advertised, as I didn't get the chance to! I could have easily achieved $2k I reckon!

Ok, I bought an EB XR8, 5 speed. Total write off.

The odometer stopped between 2008 and 2009 (according to the QLD DOT histroy) and it was showing 189XXX km

Little bit of engine work, GT40Ps, pacies and half an exhaust (dumped before the diff). The car was on ED XR6 wheels, but the owner also threw in the 19's that he had. $2100 all up, then about another $500-1000 of EL specific bits and pieces, because I did the wrong thing and bought an EB V8, not the EL V8. If you plan on doing it, get the same model donor car. Will save a lot of time, money and hassle.
But as 67RCE mentioned, the V8 T5 sells for big $$$

Would I do it again - no. I should have kept the i6 and thrown the $$$ at it instead.

Wow, do you really think it isnt worthwhile? or for the $2100 you spent could have greater levels of performance?
I have toyed with this idea but have committed to an I6 build and have sunk at least that already (havent even finnished the short motor yet!)

That V8 grumble and performance potential (let alone the parts) is a very tempting thing!

$2100 got me just the bare donor car. I then needed EL looms, ECU, engine mount (only 1 is different) etc. The figure at the moment is about $3500. The car runs, but the conversion is not 100% complete yet. The ECU needs to be tuned, and I have to deal with a couple of leaks. The main thing stopping me from finishing it is $$$. The car doesn't come out often - as I have a daily driver and a motorcycle.

I spent about $1k on the i6 motor in the 12 months before pulling it out of the car. That got me an AU bottom end, cam, exhaust and 145rwkw on the CMS dyno. The engine was begging for a turbo, and in the end that would have cost me roughly the same as what this V8 has.

That being said, my 5L sounds f**k mean 8-). I love the sound of the V8. If I want performance, it will take a LOT to make the car as quick as my bike.

Thanks for the replies guys!

So the bottom line is: Keep it nice and simple by retaining existing I6 and invest $5k to improve performance and increase power.

4.0ltr 6cyl. engine has hardly done any work (just shy of 140,000km). I bought the car 12 years ago with only 8,000km on the clock. It was my second car (first one was Suzuki Swift 1.3ltr). Since then I’ve owned and sold XT, XR6, EL and AU XR8 and GTi Golf…but I’ve kept my old EL Fairmont.

Thanks again,

Zox
