I have an FG XT with the 5 speed auto. When using the manual control to enhance engine braking to slow to a stop, there is a loud thud that jolts the car when you drop into 1st. I dont downshift above 1800 rpm. Any takers as to the problem?

its not a problem mate, will happen with most cars..

first is a short gear the down shift will be harsh and noticeable.. just dont use first to engine break, its bad for your tranny,

4 speed in my ba does the same thing if im moving faster than 20kph. Shouldn't really use a auto for engine braking anyway - it's not that good for them.

you never use first to decelerate regardless if your driving an auto or manual

You should tell Ford that... They seem to have programmed a downshift into first in their ZF boxes as an aid to slow down the car. Does a very awesome job.

I'd assume the 5 speed is the same to assist braking in performance mode.

There have been a few complaints about the new 5 speed autos in regards to clunking and such. I've seen a few comments on XR6T.com and FF.au, some of which have ended up with an auto replacement.

I know mine doesnt jolt at all. Just has a fairly rapid deceleration. :D

when the 6 speed automatically down gears to first, the injectors are electronically blocked so that no fuel is being used, you should only really notice it when rolling down hill at very low speeds..
the 5 and 6 speed auto are very different in design and the work very differently

I've noticed it when creeping very slowly at the lights in performance mode... But I mostly notice it, and first noticed it, under very heavy breaking... Like a f**k cutting you off or a roo jumping out in front of you.
