Hello,
I read a similar topic but not much info to go on. I had all gears last night and this morning. Going back home from a trip this afternoon via Beaudesert. Managed to get to Logan Village and noticed my car lost all gears. No reverse, no drive, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear also nil. Yes, it's an Auto. I had to leave the car in someones property until I can get it home. I've never had this problem. Engine runs ok, everything else runs except gears does not engage. No clunk or other noise present. Anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it? I no longer can afford workshops. Thanks for reading. Peter |

Hello SWC,
Just read your message. Sorry, I have not had the chance to see what level of transmission fluid there is as it does not have a dipstick, being a sealed unit. As far as I know of there is a plug at the side that one fills up, as to how to determine the level is a good question. At this stage my car is still at someones property until I retrieve it. Thursday or Friday will be the earliest I can tow it back. Peter |

Jack the car up both ends so that it is level. Run the engine up to operating temperature. The oil level should be up to the bottom of the fill plug hole.

Thanks for that. If I jack the car up and undo the filler plug whilst engine is cold and transmission fluid does not come out, would that indicate low oil? Or does it need to be at operating temp . i.e. "hot" in order to check if oil level is correct? I would have thought if one removes the filler plug, oil will be forced out due to engine being hot. I could be wrong on that but that's what I think would happen. I hope its not the Torque Convertor or oil pick up pump that has failed on me. I don't think there is a way of testing that until transmission is off the car. Cheers. Peter |

What is deemed to be "operating temperature".
Can anyone let me know if Auto trans has a transducer / potentiometer fitted at the side of the gearbox? I was told if that also fails then there will be no gears either. Any truth to this? Peter |

The trans needs to be warm. you should be able to hold you hand on the auto pan.
(Fords procedure is drive the car for Being that you have no drive, checking it cold won't hurt. the fluid level should be jut at the bottom of the filler hole. If it was low fluid and it stopped during a drive you will be able to see a huge leak and you would have noticed hard shifting and loss of drive around corners followed by the box slamming as it regained drive. Telling us it stopped doesn't tell us much. You what was happening leading up to it stopping. |

I read the Ford procedure, but does not say much about having no gears. I never experienced any hard shifting or slamming noises...correction...the only slamming noise I experienced was at traffic lights when I put the gear in neutral, lights changed so I accelerated then relaised I was in neutral then placed gear into drive then noticed slam. Definetly no leaks noticed under the vehicle according to person who checked when I broke down. I experienced none of those problems. Returning home from a place at the back of Beaudesert. I had no gear problems earlier, done 100kph no problems, 60kph in city limits no worries. Traveled through to Jimboomba and came down Hotz Rd Logan Village. At the time I was coasting down Hotz Rd in Drive at 80kph, reached the bottom then went to accelerate up a slight grade hill, that's when I experienced no gears. I just had enough momentum to get up the grade. Vehcile came to a gradual stop just short of a "T" Junction. I tried Reverse gear...No Reverse..I thn tried 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Drive gears again..No response to any of those. I did experience initial resistance selecting 1st Gear on 3 attempts. After going through the gears again, I eventually gained access to 1st gear , without any response. I believe this will clarify any ambiguity people might have. |

If there are no leaks, and it does have fluid then its cactus.... An electrical fault or switch would just go into limp home mode which is constant 3rd gear..

Have you tried it with a cold trans.
I've had these things being fine when cold but play up when hot. which has always been solenoid problems. These have all had some drive though. Next step is extract any fault codes and see where that leads. Then you'll need to remove the pan and inspect the debris. Beyond that it's not really something you'll be fixing at home. You can still get cheap used AU,BA,BF 4 speed boxes, I have forsale now for$300 i think. But you'll find something closer to home for similar. |

G'day Troyman, I could not even do that otherwise I would not have the need for a tow truck. I don't think my car is fitted with a limp mode switch. |

G'day tickford-6, I have not tried running it in cold satrt as yet but will do so on Saturday when I get my car back. I'll jack it up and place two car stands at the front and two at the rear axle to provide level and height clearance to work with. I never had any fault codes come up on my dash so I dont know if my car is fitted with one or the Smartshield is faulty. |

I must have dodgey wreckers where I am. Mongrels wanted to charge $650.00 from a wrecked vehicle.
I like to find one around half that price with low klm. I reside halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. |

I don't think my car is fitted with a limp mode switch. limp home mode is what the ecu does when it sences a electical fault with the trans, it puts the trans into 3rd gear so the car can still be moved.. thats why i say the box has failed mechanically |
