Hey guys,

I have a little issue with my Ba XR6 and i need some assistance.
When in tight parking situations and slow movement situations the steering wheel starts to shake and shudder...This is especially prominent when doing 3 or more point turns.
I am thinking that it is power steering but not 100% sure.
Any suggestions about fixing it?
It hasn't been happening for very long now but i want to get it fixed ASAP...

BA's had issues with pwr strg hoses causing your problem. Causes what you are describing because there is air in the system. You might need the system bleeding.

Make sure of course that there is no leakage under the front of the car where the pwr strg cooler is located and that there are no other leaks near the back of the pump or where the hoses bolt to the rack and of course, make sure there is sufficient fluid in the pump. There could also be a problem with the pump itself, we changed a lot of pumps for BA/BF during warranty period @ Thomson Ford.

Ok Thank you...Would this be an easyish job or would you recommend asking the mechanics to take a look...it will be due for a service in the next few weeks

Matey' if you don't have the expertise I would allow your Mechanic to do. You could still look to see if there are any leaks anywhere but, I suspect that the problem could be your hose.
At least if you rule out leaks then you will be satisfied that you tried.

The hose is rather expensive genuine and they are usually are available on Ebay. Maybe your mechanic can BLEED the air of of the system for starters then see. If the pump is suspect, a new one is about $300.00

I am having the EXACT same issue as mentioned by OP

Currently have got no leaks in the hoses , tried changing the pump and all the ball joints plus tie rod ends

What else could it be Papa smurf

I had no idea about tightening up the rack when i got time next time i will be giving it a good tighten as in the link you posted up

How common is it for the rack to come lose ?

It happens to SOME. There is a shim which we used to use for this problem and I think it is still available, not all need it.

Just make sure that ALL the air is bled out of your system, so many people change hoses and think that is it but there can still be air trapped in the system.

With the pump, was it new or S/H or Reco? Have seen problems with S/H pumps.

It was S/H i advised new but people just don't listen

Ahh interesting regarding the shim , is there any way to tell if it is needed ?

It isn't needed to fix the problem that is listed in TSB 01706 but if you had one on there it wouldn't present a problem. Basically you need to put loctite Anti Seize on the front part of the shank on the bolt that holds the rack on on the drivers side. Don't get it on the thread though.

There was a shim and a change to the rack, It is both in a TSB and ford implemented the changes at the factory.

The change to the rack was to put a 45 degree chamfer on the crossmember side of the ID of the mounting points of the rack. as well as adding the shim. The shim is only a pre cut 20thou thick bit of stainless shim stock. You can buy shim stock from any bearing supply place and the 20thou sheets will cut with normal house hold scissors. The shim is only there to prevent galling and wear as the alloy rack and alloy crossmember rub. the movement can still happen, the shim just slows down the wear rate. It is not a true fix, It's a band aid for a flawed mounting system that has been in place since the AU when the problem first started.

There is a revised high pressure hose. Though we have had no problems with aftermarket hoses.


The shudder can be induced by moving the steering from side to side by grabbing and pulling on the wheels with the engine not running. This normally happens during front end or brake repairs.
The air will normally clear after a few days. If not, a manual bleed process needs to be carried out.

One trick we have worked out, jack the front end off the ground and cycle the steering from lock to lock about 10 times, shut the engine off and let it sit for about 15 mins. then take the car for drive to an open car park. Do some circles left and right at 'almost' full lock.

That normally cures the induced shudder with out having to go through whole process listed out in Fords TSB.

The above is assuming the correct amount of the correct fluid is in the system and that the pump have never been run dry.

hey guys, sorry to bring up an old thread. JUst need to clarify a few things i called ford about the revised high pressure hose. They gave me a model number of 3R2J3A212E8 for a xr6 turbo ba 2003
When i gave them the code of the one in the tsb, they knew nothing about, has it been changed again since?
any comments greatly appreciated, i too have the shutter and want to get it fixed as it's doing my head in
