when I engage D (from say park) it takes 2-3 seconds to engage. It does the same from D to R.

Also, for example when I have it in first gear, and accelerate, it slips for a bit and then takes up...the oil is cherry red and there is enought oil in the box (according to the dipstick) does that sound like the bands are slipping and it simply needs a service or does it sound like something worse?

sounds like a cloggewd filter, take it in for a full service and flush

do clogged filters do that?!....box is about 40,000kms old btw...

My EF is doing that, well the take off thing anyway, but it did have the wrong fluid in it when i bought it, damaged it.

clogged filter=reduced fluid flow, which will mean sluggish take-up of gears

shouldnt happen in 40,000km, but anything is possible
