Yes that's limp home mode, you will have to scan for codes to find out what has gone wrong.

No point guessing what the reason for it going into limp mode. As soon as you can have a diagnostic ran to find the fault code. Leaving it too long will only damage the trans further (eg. burning the fluid and blocking more soleniods/burning out clutches&bands) I had to replace S1 (shift soleniod) on mine a while back as it was going intermitent into limp mode.

hey dude. this exact problem happened to my car last xmas. EBII 6. its in limp mode and you probably need a new Oil Pressure Solenoid.

Its a part in your auto box. and what it does is each time your auto changes gear, this solenoid decides how much oil needs to be sent through the auto inorder for it to change gear. And if this is inactive, which in your case it is. Then your car wont change gear.

It cost me 450 to get that done and serviced :)

$30 well spent if you replace the wrong part and still not fixed!

it happened in my EF, took to an auto guy, and it was the salector switch on the side of the box, plus a seal had gone, also if you let it go it will clog up your comp, mine was a dog when it happened, 50 bucks and she was sweet
Acidic

i ran a diagnostic check on it yesterday , 6 codes came up : tansmission solonoids 5 and 2 were fualty , it failed its high and low idle test ( which i think is a MAP sensor or an injector problem ) , the power steering sensor , and the throttle position sensor , the TPS has was replaced 2 months ago for this same problem and fixed it up until recently , i checked all the voltages at the TPS and then pulled out the ECU and checked all the voltages there , all are within specs , so im ruling out the TPS sensor , i dont know much about the ford gearboxes , so do any of you think that it is those 2 transmission solonoids doing it ?

Spanaid i would delete the current fault codes as some may be old ones, take it for a drive (hoping it goes into limp mode) and this will give you the newest fault codes.

have you checked the condition of your battery?
cos 90% of the time when a vehicle goes in limp mode its cos the battery is dead or on its way out. so grab a multimeter and check your cold cranking amps.very common problem
having a faulty S2 solenoid with just make the tranny thump into gears simaler to a shift kit.

I had a similar problem with my EL XR8 it would intermittently drop in and out off limp mode turned out to be a loose earth strap.
