My fuel gauge seems to be a little eratic.
When the tank is full, the gauge is at full, but after driving, sometimes for 250 kms, the gauge suddenly drop 1/2 a tank 
The instrumant cluster diagnostics mode seems to show the fuel level dropping in a way more consistant with milage. Is this a common problem with EF fuel gauges and is there an accurate way to better check the gauge? If the gauge has a mechanical problem that causes it to stick and not respond cleanly to the electrical signal, is there any way to repair it ? Cheers |

i got same problem with my ef gli
well not same, but fuel gauge is dodgy it said i had about 1/4 of a tank left i filled up...... 59litres!!!!! out of a 62L tank :S

The fuel gague runs off a sensor, and when the fuel hits the snesor or when it has weight on it moves the gague. The gague mves when you drive. Its not a deifnte indicator, just a gengeral one.

back on topic... could the gauge be sticky? perhaps pull the cluster apart & give it a clean - the needle might be catching or something - worth checking anyways!

I dunno about you guys but i've had a pretty whacky fuel gauge ever since i bought the car. Most cars will have some variance but i can go from 1/4 tank to halfway through E going up a hill... then coming back down to flat ground, back up to 1/4 tank... not good when your car is capable of burning through huge amounts of fuel, very quickly.
You get a feel for it tho...

This could be the most likely culprit, since you've said the diagnostics seem to show a more accurate reading. You can get a pen or a pointer of some sort, and carefully lift the Fuel gauge needle to full, let it drop and see if it comes down smoothly. I've noticed with these dial indicators that they can bind a bit when you push the needles back in, and if this is happening, carefully lever under the needle to lift it, it may help free it up. The general rule with this stuff is to be gentle. If you want to test the calibration of the fuel level system whilst in diagnostic mode use the below sender resistance values for comparison:
Empty: 10ohms, Warn LT comes on: 28ohms, ¼ 40.5ohms, ½ 66ohms, ¾ 95ohms, Full 149ohms. If your cluster has a voltmeter, you can substitute it as your fuel gauge for further testing - check their part numbers on the indicator bodies, and make sure they're the same.

But some runs through the pipes and into a sump concept I think. Hehe I know how low on fuel your car gets doc! By the way you spelt Falcon wrong on the left <--- |

He could have been in the diagnostic mode or if he has a trip computer installed with a fairly average fuel economy, work it out from those readouts. |

Ford rate the tanks at 68L, however they don't consider that you might fill it all the way up the spout, you can get several more litres in by overfilling the tank. Yes some servos do occasionally have dodgy pumps, however they are strictly controlled and are usually fixed immediatly, otherwise hefty fines.

if your fuel tank is stuffed cant you feel the car is lighter
Like when the thank has 1/4 tank and you fill up i feel that it sits on the road better |

i know when i did my dash mod.. i pushed those gages in.. and when i installed it back in the car.. they got stuck at certain places where the black backing thing was a little higher than the rest..
all i had to do was pull them out a little and was all good
