Nice ute A bone, im a big fan of a clean X series ute. Ive mounted window switched on the sides of the centre console and its fairly functional and neat, mine doesnt have an Au consold though.
Going back to sootys method on cab extension... do you think structual integrity would be compromised with cutting and glueing it? hope he does a write up on how he has done it. sorry to back track

It's about to tick over 5 years since the cab extension was done, and I had a real good look at it all yesterday when fitting the new rear window, and nothing has moved. This is the 3rd ute we did this way, and all are daily drivers/work utes, and no problems have shown up yet. One XF we did has recently been destroyed in a nose-tail accident with a bus and a 4wd, and the rear bulkhead is still fine, no cracks or distortion at all. 8-)

Thanks heaps mate

Nah that's alright mate that's still a major project that I definitely want to do. I'm not to clear on all the areas that need to be covered. What i would LOVE more than anything is to have a spare beat up XH i could try this on as my XH is my daily at the moment. (mechanic coming tomorrow to fix the Hyundai hahaha  )

Doing the Power windows I'd definitely keep it neat. Nothing stupid.
I don't think I could go back to the old console  I love the AU one too much, I mean... I have CUP HOLDERS :D

That sounds tops mate. I trust a veteran of the X series like yourself

Hope no one was hurt in that accident.

Is there any way we can get a write up or doco on all the steps in doing the cab extension when you do your next one? hopefully

I tinted the windows on my dark blue XH and they look sweet. Looks like the rear 3 on yours are already done, the doors alone couldn't cost much and might make a difference.

Otherwise, your ute is super clean example of a great looking model in my opinion.

I've got a word doc version floating around somewhere - once you get the gear, remind me and I'll try to find it.
I've since gone to an EB/ED Fairmont console, installed the cup holders in the rear (as per the doco on here), and modded a 4 switch panel to 2 switch to fit in the fitting spot.

Thanks Thomas i wouldn't mind going a bit darker on the tint now that you mention it.
To be honest i hadn't even thought about a darker tint. maybe somewhere down the track ill go darker.

And Snap I've seen that doco on the cup holders. really creative idea there mate. I was considering doing that but i have a 12 disc stacker behind the console and its in a good position there. ill have a look around and give you a shout when i get the gear ready for the elec windows.

Cheers boys

Shame your so far away - I have a spare XH that we are looking to sell soon.... It's a bit rough, but would be a good project car, no rust, pretty straight, etc. Feel like a quick trip to brisvegas and back with a car trailer?

I will definately do a tech doco the next time we do a cab extension. Just not sure when it will be. And I will find out the name of the glue that we use. 8-)

Awesome Sooty thanks for that mate.

Haha had I not been on holidays the last few weeks I would probably been keep as to make the trip up but i just went back to work Monday and with this s**t weather in Melbourne its not good for Roof Tilers at the moment. Been pushing through the rain to get as many hours in as i can.

Having a 2nd XH would be amazing (i could attempt the cab extension without hesitating). For the area we live in we're very fortunate to have such a big back yard (2 backyards actually)

Below is a couple photos of our monster drive way which could do with a few more Fords

And ofcourse the sexH gets prime pozi right at the front door 8-)

How can you have a driveway like that and not have big dirty black tyre marks everywhere?

I keep all my extra/parts/project cars out at Mums, she has 15 acres, so we just pile all the cars up on the back half of the block. We call them "Natural Resources", Mum calls the a mess. Each to there own. 8-)
It's a bit of a pain being 45 minutes away, but with the sheds, tools, hoist, and all the parts cars out there, it's a lot easier than trying to do it under the house in a single car garage, or a carport. Once I can afford it, and I have my own shed built, I will be able to do a lot more at home. One day..... :?
And I will find out the name of the glue that we use. 8-)
The stuff is called Fuse-all. It is a two-pack urethane-type substance, costs approx $100.00 for a tube (to go in a caulking gun) and is used to attach roofs and rear quarter panels to new cars. This stuff was used on my ute, as well as the mates XF that was written off last month. After 5 years (in mine) and longer in his, and even after being rear ended by a semi, and shoved into a parked 4wd, it hasn't cracked or moved at all. Highly recommended, and much easier than welding.

If you are keen to try this, but dont want to risk your own ute, try and find a wrecked XD-XF ute. You only need the shell, even if it has been smashed in the front. A wrecker wouldnt want much for a smashed, stripped ute shell. (And you could even tell him he can have it back when your finished). You could dummy up the interior, etc, and try the mods, etc without damaging your XH..... Just a thought anyway.

How would this mod go from a roadworthy perspective? Have you heard of any issues with this Sooty?
