Good day all

I am crazy about this site and it has been a real big help to me.

I bought a 1980 Ford Escort MK2 4 Door. This will be my 2015 project and I know it will be a great project. I will post some pictures at the bottom of this post. Please guys this is my first big project and I would really appreciate any advise you guys can give me. I am planning on turbo charging the motor. The car will be a weekend toy for me and will not be used daily. I just need some advise on the topics listed below:

1. What motor would you guys advise I use for the project? Remember it will be turbo charged and I am from South Africa so don't have all the motors here.

2. What gearbox would you guys advise? It must be RWD

3. Suspension???

4. Brakes? Currently the car has drum brakes all around

5. Steering setup?

Looks like you have your self a nice little project here. are you sure its 1990 shape looks wrong, it looks like my old one that was 1980~
i had a 1980~ Escort about 13 years ago as my first car.
when i first got it it was a near stuffed 1.6L kent engine, i hammered it around like that for about 6 months till the engine became compression-less and refused to run any more. from there i ripped the 1.6 out and dropped in the 2.0L pinto OHC. changing the engine required me to change over the cross member to the one from a 2L escort (who would have thought they used different cross members, i sure didn't but the engine just would not fit with the original, it was hitting on the fire wall) after sorted that i ran it like that for a year and a half b4 pulling it off the road to give it a freshen up.
it was not long after that i got a job and unfortunately lost interest in her, she sat around for ages, then got given her away just to get her out the way.
Not sure if i still had any parts laying around.

Miss the ol girl sometimes

Robert

I stuck with the Standard motors that they came out with. they were a 1.3L, 1.6L kent engines or 2L pinto.

i hear of people putting the mazda/ford DOHC injected turbo engines in.

again i stuck with the 4spd Manuel that mine came with, i was going to put the 3spd auto in because i could, so i thought. NO the tunnels are different between the auto and Manuel. auto tunnel is bigger

i stuck to standard originally, changed to 2l struts and lowered it slightly later on, never drove it after that tho.

mine had disks on the front drums on the rear. maybe try and find ya self some struts that can fit disks on?

can check if i had any left not sure on condition of them, not sure if i have disks or calipers to go with them.

Yes was a typing mistake, rectified it now... I have been thinking about this project for the past 4 years and then all of the sudden I saw this body for a good price and I bit the bullet and just bought it...

Will be a nice racing toy...

good price is always a great start from the pictures it doesn't look too bad, i have heard of worse being fixed up!

they definitely make good little race/rally cars!

heres a link here on ford mods on escort engines, not sure how much info you will fine helpful, i did notice on a quick read that the Nissan motors are listed.

Good luck and hope to see your progress.

Robert

aha-dont know how that happened-I seemed to have ended up in between your description post/quote-in my previous post"WEIRD", Johnny.

P.S I reckon a Cosworth DOHC "Turbo" would be ideal......
