I recently purchased a neat NA Sportsman for the missus from a guy on the Central Coast. Got it very cheap because it has a blown head gasket, suspected cracked head and doesn't shift into top gear. All fairly simple things to fix, so I did the deal and threw it on a car float and brought her home for some much needed TLC.

Here it is after getting it home and givivng it a bit of a clean up

It has woodgrain interior that I have been searching high and low for the NC
Image
Which has now been removed to be cleaned up and will be installed in the NC later today :)
Looking a bit bare atm!
Image
But the rest of the interior is in pretty good nick
Image
but this will all be getting removed and sold as I will be throwing in the NCII Ghia interior which I have had in storage since putting LTD gear in the NC.
Next step, to tackle the head gasket issue and have the head crack tested.
Cheers,
Mick

So, yesterday I started pulling everything off the engine in preperation of removing the head to inspect the damage :? Must be a pretty major fail because there was water and cream everywhere
Image
Image
Image
PS pump and exhaust manifold has been removed
Image
and today I'm gunna have a go at removing the intake side, it looks a bit more fiddly and shall test my patience :x
This is all a learning experience for me as I have never pulled down a six before, but can't be any harder than removing the heads from an eight..... right :?
One thing I did have trouble with was cracking the head bolts  But that was only because I was trying to do it with a 1/2" torque wrench with a 3/4" adaptor and 3/4" extension bits and sockets. Now my sockets are of good quality, but the adaptors and extensions are cheap s**t, so they were the weakest link and this is what happens to the weak bits
Image
But I have that all sorted now and am gunna borrow my bro-in-laws sydchrome 1/2" socket set and breaker bar
Now I managed to have a bit of luck last night and came across Troyman puting up a clean 3.9l head with cam and rocker gear complete for $50.......score :D
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=75745
Thanks Troyman....one less thing to search for

Mmmm, head cream.

Nice Lane, i was going to buy a sportsman once, but fell through. With you responsible for the LaneTD, it'll be a real nice car.

Thanks mate, not quite sure about the Spotsman options, haven't really looked into it, but I know the later models had a tickford 4.oL which was identifiable by the Green rocker cover, but this one just has the stock 3.9. It does have 2 tone paint and velour interior/wood???

Thanks Pimp, this one will get a little attention mainly in the form of hand-me-downs from the NC such as Mags, interior etc and of course it shall be dumped on it's guts
Later I plan on throwing the AU motor out of the EBII into it once it gets parted out.
Mick

OK! Have ordered head gasket kit and pick up my new head on Saturday.
If all goes to plan, should have her up and running by Sunday :| Can't wait as I haven't even had a chance to drive it yet other than loading it onto the car float and getting it off again

the sportsman looks very classy, i like the two tone paint on it. With lowering, you probably wouldnt even need other rims to make it look hot

Thanks mate, feel free to do one of your photoshops on it  you know you wanna!
It was actually the two-tone paint that drew my attention to it....looks very unique and I havn't seen one around like it before. As for the mags, the wife wants the chrome Volts off the NC so I am on the hunt for the FPV GT's like in my sig pic....I know, sucks to be me

They do actually look good. Maybe it is just the black ones that look s**t. LOL.

I love the two tone paint too, I think Ford should have done more of that.

Hey Mick

I love the look of the sportsman. And thanks for the link to the black over silver LTD. I am getting ideas now about the wagon.

Cheers
