Thanks for the info twason.
I pulled the diff out of my EA II today, this one is going in the ED as a temporary measure. What a pain in the a** to pull out, sedans have gotta be easier (never done one). Biggest pain was getting the diff out over the springs. Found it easier to get it off the springs under the car and then drag it out the side. Will be an interesting exercise getting it into the ED on Sunday on my own with maybe my wifes assistance  Plus, I haven't checked out what is involved with the ABS on the rear of the ED yet, other than that it should pretty much be that same as the EA.

Well, first up the diff replacement never happened. Turned out that the caliper mounts are different on the ABS ED than a 90 EA. The caliper mount also has the ABS sensor mount in the ED so I am still needing a diff.
As indicated in another thread, the ED's engine died suddenly as has not gone again. So now it is sitting in my backyard being pulled to bits in readiness for the installation of the EF engine I have along with a replacement trans purchased from Troyman. All going well, by Friday it should be running again depending how I go getting the engine swap done. The main issue for me is the pulling out, putting in as I am not a big lad We shall see....

Hi RD
Re the diff, you can pull the axles and then swap the backing plate over. And when you are ready to hoist the donk out ect, I would be happy to give you a hand if I am free. BenJ

BenJ Thanks for the diff info. Can't do it now with what had as everything has gone to scrap now. At least I know now I don't have to have an ABS specific diff for the future. The engine will be ready for pulling this avo if all goes well. Once out, I have to transfer exhaust & inlet manifolds, water pump, harmonic balancer, pwr steer mounts, rocker cover and aircon mounts to the EF engine before chucking it in. Thanks for the offer of assistance, I may just need it

Bit of a dilema here with this engine extraction.....
Just need to figure out how to move the crane further towards the car now otherwise I am screwed!

BenJ But don't I need to get the engine centred on the chain/hook to better get the engine over the clip?

It's out, thank God..... I managed to get the balance point a little further back and with my wifes help we manhandled it out of the car. It is now sitting further up the property ready to be stripped of the parts I need for the EF engine.
The next trick will be getting the other engine & trans in. Everything should be ready to go by tomorrow avo after cleaning and fitting all the bits of the ED along with the air con pump off my spare EB II. Oh, and for reference, for others, putting ED (or earlier) hardware on the front of an EF engine will require either a ED etc timing cover or you will need to tap the very bottom hole where the air con idler mount bolts on, its the hex head one. Only found this out today after I tried for a while to screw the bugger in! Wish me luck with tomorrow and getting the hole filled! Cheers RD

Well, no air conditioning for me for a while. After tapping the hole for the air con tensioner I found the the EF timing cover has extra ribs that stop the tensioner going on in the right place. So for now I will run without it and get my A-into-G and find the various bits (after saving for them) for a serpentine belt conversion.
Anyway, the old engine is stripped and the replacement is slowly going together. The friggen heat is killing me out there so plenty of water and breaks. I am guessing an hour or two and it will be ready to start the install process. Ben, me ole mate, if you have the time I would appreciate you popping in if you can, mainly so I can save Rach from the task at hand. We'll give it a go of course but I am not too confident

We'll give it a go of course but I am not too confident Cheers RD hi good to see its coming along.. you can grind the ribs on the timing case to get the ed aircon tensioner to fitt.. this is what i had to do when i used the ed aircon/accesories on the au engine. i beleive its much the same for the ef.. |

Thanks for that tidbit, Ben rang and told me what you posted as I was outside about to clean the engine. Out with the grinder and now the tensioner fits! Rach is happy about that too as she wasn't too keen on having no air con..... Well, things are moving slowly but it is almost together again, about another hour or so. I am all fed now so have some more energy. Depending on how I go I might still attempt to chuck it in tonight. Depends though as Rach's Mum is over from NZ and they have been drinking wine all afternoon...

It's in...... sort of. My darling wife once again came to the rescue. She came out to say goodnight and I asked if we could "quickly" put it in.... and the rest is history.
Now, the "issues". First up, the replacement trans I just put in hasn't got a rear mount - didn't even think of it. Easy fix, just means I'll have to pull the trans off the old engine and grab that one. I have new engine mounts in - the left hand side (passenger) went in fine and sat perfectly. The right (drivers) however is sitting a little high and is missing by 1/2 a bolt hole. How does one get this bugger to sit down properly so I can bolt it up? Aside from those two things a few nigglies like forgetting to keep the trans wiring above the trans and also forgetting the shift lever. Those will be cured in the morning hopefully along with the right hand engine mount.... I need some bloody sleep now..... Cheers RD

It lives!! Spent the day slowly putting things back together. IWith my eyes closed I turned the ignition on, waited for the fuel to prime then went a little further. She turned over twice and fired! That just made it all worth it.
I still have to fill the trans with fluid but thats it. Got to go out for dinner now so I will take her for a run either later tonight or in the morning. Just blipping it sitting still seems more responsive than the old engine so I am hopeful it will go well. Cheers RD
