so basically i had a knock/grinding noise for the LH rear wheel a couple of days before i did the manual conversion. when i was putting the gearbox in i saw the very outside edge of the rotor went metal on metal with the pad so i assumed that was the noise and the rotor was just badly warped but it got louder. i check if the wheel was loose with a wheel brace and did the shake test on it and it was fine. today while driving something went clunk and the car wanted to pull left hard so i pulled over and 2 of the studs on my spacers had snapped so i pulled my rattle gun out the boot and tried to tighten the other 3 but they werent going any tighter. i limped home on the backstreets the last 3 kms and went to take the wheel of, one nut came off ok and the other 2 i had to break off to get the wheel off. basically the spacers studs had stretched like a redskin lolly and broken (they seem soft as for studs). so im rocking a 14" steel spare now and il replace the studs on the spacer with some descent ones. but im thinking this is a warning. i really like the BA XR6 17"s i got on now but i wana F**k off the spacers STAT. might just get some 15" steelies and drive on them and sell the 17"s until i get some replica pre - au ford rims.

thanks its not too bad.

was a nissan mechanic and they are good to drive and never have any major probs (then i spent some cash on it and it scares afew commodore owners haha). the missus drives the xtrail to work and i drive the falcon. then when either are in bits or getting something fitted i can use the other one. when the vw's back in action il just drive the falcon or the vw to work but mainly drive the vw on the W/E's

always loved aircooled VW's since i was a kid and its the reason i became a mechanic (@ a VW/NISSAN dealer). always wanted a beetle and then looked at a type 3 and their heaps better to drive than a beetle (twin carbies etc). new vw's are cool to drive too but expensive to fix and maintain and they break down alot hahaha.

ok so picked up my new AU falcon today for the grand price of $250 bucks, needs power steering pump cos it has run dry got hot and the plastic pulley melted off the splines. needs a boot opener switch, drivers b pillar trim, 2 headlights damaged, no LH side mirror, trans is leaking real bad and slips like nothing ive ever seen. its dual fuel and auto trans has a drip stick so i suspect its an ex taxi. guna neaten it up (new set of door trims, touch up the body and couple of cans of interior cleaner), get it running right, fix leaks, put the auto trans from my ED into it. should get atleast $1500 for it.

also me, the boss and a work mate went 3rds in an ED that we want parts off, has EL xr6 15" 6 spoke alloys, not the best looking wheel but exactly what i want to put on the ED. wana P1$$ these spacers and 17"s off quick

hey all,
so today i removed and scored an ED xr6 tickford head and manual xr6 ecu! thanks to a mate who bought a damaged one and desided to wreck it. im still wondering weather its worth getting it shaved abit or just machined. i run 95/98 mostly.

also i wana put an AU gasket on with it. what year model au gasket would suit the ED? i had a brief read and read something about the holes being different sizes? also remember reading somewhere about what brand gaskets were the go but cant find it now. and AU head bolts, same? bigger? longer? any help would be great, cheers

i believe series 1 isnt it?? thats the same as e-series isnt it?

you have to consider the metal gasket is quite thin, if you shave the head you up the compression alot more then normal but a small shave like 10thou should be good for it

cheers huggie, just found a tech doc on head gaskets and im half way through that now. sounds like il be getting an MLS AU metal gasket from ford? apparently a fair bit thinner so it ups the comp abit and last bit longer than a composite gasket?
still havent seen anything about if i can use AU head bolts?

if you look on ebay and check with repco the headbolts are labeled as EA-AU on the packets...

you can always check the ACL website.. thats how i scored my VRS kit for 35 bucks posted, as a 3.2L EA uses all the same gaskets as EA, EB and ED 3.9 and 4.0 :D only difference is the rings.

Looking good mate, quick idea, maybe bog the grill to the winlight surrounds, make it look more "factory". I reckon it would look awesome! any AU gasket as long as it is an MLS gaskey will be the right one to go for.

cheers 67RCE! yeh i never thought about doing that but now you said it it would look good. although the only issue would be that there is a mounting screw for the light covers on the inside edge next to the grill so if i bogged or glassed them together it wouldnt be accessable. i wana see if a standard xr6 grill fits over the twin lights :D

but if you join the 2 together you wont need the center suports, the ED XR nose cones dont have mounts there so it would be fine
