Hey all, I need some advice from the X series experts as well as AU.
The plan is simple ( maybe) put an AU engine into the XF and turbo it down the track. The XF is a 4.1 EFI 4sp manual. What I need to know is firstly, how difficult will it be to physically put the AU engine into the XF? Will I be able to run the XF's 4sp manual behind it or will I need an Au box? If so, how much work is it to install an Au box into it? I'm aware that pre May '99 AUI have smartlock and the later models have smartsheild which is no good to me. If I source an AU1 engine and computer, will I need the body module aswell? Will the Xf dash still work? I'm really looking for any advice that will help in this conversion or anything that I need to know. Thanks in advance! |

Sounds easy enough to do...
First bit of advice is to decide if you really want to turbo it down the track... If you do want to turbo it, then it would probably be worth your while to use a series 2 or 3 computer and have it flashed to remove the Smartshield... Gearbox is easy. Remove the input snout and have a machine shop either build up it's outer dia and remachine it to match the outer dia of a T5's snout or have them machine up a shim/locating ring. You will need to redrill your bellhousing to suit the the single rail. Top right hole is close, so you may want to install a grub screw in this hole before you drill and tap the hole for the single rail. XG engine mounts... Sway bar...? Mod your sump and fit an XG bar or have a bar made up... Try to keep the AU loom as a stand alone. Could write more, but ATM I really CBF'd...

I've done this conversion to an XD. I used an AU 3 engine and auto with a J3 chip in the ecu to bypass the smartshield.

If you decide on using a Smartlock ecu, this is an easy bypass.
