An Outback had rubber spats underneath, heavy duty Yellow shockies, rear shockie protectors, HD steel rims of 15" diameter, a Donaldson Cyclopack airfilter unit, a Hydratrack diff with 3.45 diff gears, cruise control etc......

Kinda hard to go by anything other than the build plate numbers. The reason I say this is because I have a 98 (yes 98) longreach that had the outback splashguards optioned onto it plus cruise, xr style seats, bash plates, roll bar and aircon all from the factory. Yet the numbers say it is a plain longreach.
Go into your Ford dealer and (if they're any good) they will tell you everything you need to know about the vehicle, right down to what was optioned onto it at the factory.

Check the compliance plates in the engine bay.
IIRC XHII ran from 10/97 til 06/99.
AFF website has brochure scans for both XHI and XHII, fitment options are all there.

This is your best bet, as some items will/will not be fitted - I found that with my ute also.
