I did this in my xd and from memory all you need is the actual plug that goes into the cluster itself. The colours on the wires are a pain though and it is actually one wire short. Max Ellerys manuals are the best ones if you can get a hold of one.

well there isa lot more to it than that i assure you...

if you want to use the XF/ZL heater box as well, you will notice the heaqter box is about 50mm thicker, and the XD dont have an extra protrusion into the engine bay to allow for the room.

i am doing this conversion right now and have consulted my engineer to odify the firewall and extend a section into the engine bay to allow enough room for the new heater box.

i spent a bit of time looking at modifying the XD heater box to use behind the dash, but didnt want to give up the superiour design of the XF box and the electronic controls of the ZL heater control, so i decided to use the ZL heater box.

i have a heap of photos to show the size differances.

aside from the heater box, the rest of it is a direct bolt in, the dash lines up, all bolt holes remained the same, the passenger side footwell air vent needs a bit of work to seal it properly as it site slightly to far forward over the hole, but its not to big a problem.

if you want to put the digital cluster behind the XD dash, well im not sure, i havent looked into it.

as for wiring diagrams, i have a few scans from an origional ford service manual which are pretty clear to help you sort out wiring.

i belive the change is a pretty big one, ive seen it done before and it looks good, which is why im doing it, but normally with the sacrafice of the heater and air controls, the XF dash will fit over the top of the XD heater box, but with no controls for the heater.

let me know if you are still keen on the mod and ill dig up some pics

cheers... Jas

Yeah I only changed the cluster not the whole dash. That was way too hard!

I am definately keen on doing it and keeping the Zl heater box too, if you could help me out with pics and wiring diagrams i'd appreciate it a lot. are you acctually going to cut a hole through your firewall to have the heater box stick out? if so let me know as i will no doubt do the same. Also i thought the XF firewall came further back to allow for the longer 6 cyl motor how is it that the heater box wont fit into the XD?

well, no idea what you are talking about, then engine blocks are the same size, the XF isnt longer...?

the wiring diagrams are different to the Gregory manuals ones, they have the correct colours and correct wires going to the right number plugs

Now for the hole in the firewall, im not going to have it "Stick Out", the firewall will have a section cut out and extended into the engine bay approximatly 50mm, with new mounting holes and plates welded in. the firewall mod must be engineered to be legal.

well now the firewalls for the XD and XF are different (Had this argument a few times), the XF has an extra bulge into the engine bay on the passenger side, which is what i will be replicating on the XD, the XD has a much flatter firewall and with the two heater boxes next to each other it is obvious.

be aware its not an easy mod thats for sure

i have done the conversion ended up giving up on the heater box but the easist was is to remove xd wiring loom and install the xf one it took my electrician mate 16 hours to work out which wires go where all the wires are different colours form xd - xf so save your self a big head ache and use the wirring loom also the head light work differently in xd to xf xf required to use extra relays xd did not

Warlock,

does your manual explain how to remove the XF ducting behind the dash? I can't find my book anywhere.... I have removed the vacuum lines, disconnected the wiring all thats left is the damn hand brake. The manual i read says to just undo the two hand brake retaining bolts and the ducting should just slide out. Doesn't happen. Does your book say any different?
