I was wondering if any six speed gearboxes would bolt onto an XG without major modifications. The 5 speed is fine, but this Ute does many long trips travelling at about 130kmh and it revs at about 3000. Which i think is quite good for that speed, but would like to bring it down a bit if that's even possible, and save a bit of fuel. (not that its that bad on fuel anyway) has anyone done or heard of this, any suggestions?

try swapping diff for 2.92-1 and see how that goes before committing to a 6 speed swap, had an xd with 2.77-1 diff and t5 and that was a bit too tall, wasn't worth using 5th unless doing 150km or above. (hypothetically of course) for legal reasons lol.

thanks rusty. I think i might go with 2.92-1. Actually makes a lot more sense than gearbox swap. Are the diffs that hard to change?

So if we use a VT-VZ LS1 box , apart from the speedo issue's i have read, tail shaft shouldnt be all to hard get a custom one

What else am i looking at on fitting ? , which malwood kit would i need for the clutch pedal "conversion" ?

The early EA's with T5's had 2.92 diff gears.....I had one.....the auto's ( BW51's ) had 2.77's.

ahh yes yes obviously 4.11s in the diff or some type of gear change

I have read on here a 1/4 mile time of a AU XR8 with a T56 doing a shocking time for some reason 2.2sec 60ft time or something which i expected to be a lot quicker maybe the first and 2nd gears in the T56 are different ratios then the T5s ?

Early T5's were 3.50:1 first gear, and the later ones were 3.25:1....these are 6 cyl ones.

Lol. I'd forgotten all about this thread... 89.SVO thats weird. My XG with t5 and 3.27 or 3.23 whatever the f**k it is also sat on 1900 at 100kmh same as you with 2.77... And it had a stupidly short first gear that was completely useless unless hill starting on a near vertical hill... Maybe Ford screwed up with me XG and the gearbox was made of spare parts from various different models lol.

least you dont have 3.45's and sit on 2700 at 110 just before the cam powerband and suck fuel like a lord like my old Ghia did... id hate to see what 4.11's are at.

If your going to use a t56 from a ls1 you'll need to swap the input shaft over from a Tuet 6000 which is a t56 from a vz 6L as its shorter . Or find a Tuet 6000 like I did .

You won't need a custom tail shaft I have a Tuet 6000 vz 6L t56 and my standard tail shaft fits perfect . The box is only like 40 mm longer than a t5 . Shifter came up in the normal spot just had to trim 20 mm from the trans tunnel .

I made my hydraulic pedal from a ba hydraulic clutch pedal assembly . Which is exactly what malwood do but mine was $600 cheaper lol

Aiming for 300 rwkw
