Yep, wheel nuts were a part of a very complex issue. Someone replaced the original Ford shank mag wheel nuts with steel rim nuts. I suspect, but cannot confirm, that this was done to try and reduce the vibration. The original wheel nuts have a smaller taper section but a shank that helps line up the rim on the hub spigot. If you read the OP above you will see that the rims were redone, with new profile inserts (to match the new OEM wheel nuts), and a set of original Ford wheel nuts will be used on the OEM front hubs. EF/EL alloy wheel nuts have no shank on them, they are a tapered end to match the taper in the rim.

Wrong. Original OEM NL Fairlane wheel nuts are black (call your local Ford dealer) and have a different part number to steel rim nuts. Anyway I am tired of all this nonsense. Will not post any more replies. My thanks to those who have engaged in the discussion and found it helpful. Regards, KH

actually
just had a thought being a gay assed e series could the wheel bearings not have been tensioned up correctly when the new hubs where fitted? loose wheel bearings will cause all sorts of vibrations through the steering
