As I am raping this ute for all of the 5 speed goodies for my ute, and replacing it with an auto, what should I do re the ECU's? If it is a dedicated dual fuel ECU, will it still work with an auto? Is there a cheap "trick" to make it work? I could then do the resistor bit to my auto ECU, when I fit the T5....
Or do I need to find an auto / dual fuel ECU?

help........ :?
You can run an EL 6TGE ECU (EL Tickford LPG) - I forgot your car was manual, you might find it's a std XH manual ECU, I don't believe there were any manual Tickford LPG ECU's produced for any of the I6's.

This may help, I posted it up years ago but no one made it a sticky so it hides deep down in the LPG forum.

Thats the factory Tickford fitted unit fitted to the ute. The module that alters the ignition timing for LPG is built into the ECU. It will still have an AMS module bolted to the steering column.

{DESCRIPTION}

I wouldn't consider putting the LPG into your ute unless the donor ute runs well on both petrol and LPG. No missing at idle, no stalling on deceleration and backfiring.

If you want to see how much performance you will lose from the ute once LPG is fitted; simply fit the intake with the gas mixer ring on to you ute. Block off the gas mixer and take it for a drive around the block. Prepare to be disappointed cos it will have the performance equal to an XF falcon.

Thanks mate, that looks very helpful.
It runs like a woolly goat at the moment, but it hasn't been started for over 4 years, and the fuel smells pretty funky. I will be fitting new plugs, leads, cap, rotor and fuel filter this weekend, add some fresh fuel, change the oil and filter, and check the timing, and then see how she runs.

I think I will leave the LPG on this ute for now, and we'll see how it runs. I don't do a lot of k's in my ute, as it's only about 12 k's to work. The wagon has lpg, so we will use that for the longer trips anyway. It looks like a huge resriction on the intake, I would want to improve that before I would use it.

Edit: Oh, and there is no module anywhere around the steering column. There is, however, a module looking box under the drivers seat? Could that be it?

I think the gas-on-my-ute idea is dying a slow death. I will either do the resistor trick to my ECU, or see if Joel (ozbmx) will do me a super price on the manual XH ECU he is selling. :D

I have an EL ex-taxi in the yard, that was obviously on gas. I will check out it's ECU and get the numbers, it may solve the problems....

Hi mate, welcome aboard.
If you look in my gallery there are a couple more pics.
Ashcook has a lot of pics on his build thread as well, have a look around and you will find it.

Next time we do one, I will do a tech doco with lots of pics. 8-)

OK, quick update.
Sunday I replaced the plugs, leads, cap & rotor. Drained out the old s**t fuel and poured in 10 litres of fresh fuel. Now she runs a bit better! Idles OK, starts without touching the pedal, revs OK. Blows a bit of white-ish smoke, but I still need to change the oil & filter, and the fuel filter.
Also cleaned the whole car, degreased and hot washed the engine bay with the gerni, washed in the back, got all the dirt and leaves from around the tank. I removed the seats, console, rubber mats (no carpet - it is a ute) and door trims. Vacuumed about 10kg of dirt & crap from the floor, gerni'd the mats and door trims, and inside the door jams, etc. Nice and clean now.

I will probably start removing the T5 and assoc bits this weekend. The dash will also be coming out, as the dash pad is cherry (mine is cracked) and I want to have a good look at the pedal box, etc. I'll get some pics as I go.

We have decided we will be selling the ute, once it is converted to an auto. I will re-assemble the interior, replace the broken door handles and mirrors, replace the lh door glass (broken) and get it as close as possible to roadworthy condition. We are not going to repair the body work, it can stay like it is for now, whoever buys it can worry about that. I will make up a full set of 14" steelies for it, most of the ones we have here have good tyres. I think we should be able to get at least $2k for it, it would be a good builders, etc ute for that price. I mean $2k for a late falcon ute, on gas, with 4 speed auto and air and steer is a pretty good price.
Whaddya reckon? 8-)

I had a slack attack this weekend, so no news on the utes.
I do need some good old fordmods help though. :D
I was asked today if the Tickford LPG system fitted to the XH, would be able to be fitted to an AU ute. Obviously the intake plumbing is different, but I have the remains of an EL taxi gas system that may be useful for that side of things, but what about the rest of the system?
Will the Tickford gas computer be OK with the AU ECU and wiring?
Anything else I need to worry about?
Help me out here guys, will be much appreciated.
Cheers. 8-)

Quick update :-
Sunday I removed the dash and pedal box from the donor ute. I will need to reinforce the pedal box before it goes into my ute, so I thought this was the easiest way to go.
I also removed the auto pedal box from the ED wreck I have, in case I need spares, etc. (The dash and column were already out, so it was a 5 minute job to remove it).
I also cut the clutch cable mount section from the firewall of the ED. It was an auto, so the firewall section was cherry. I will make my own reinforcing plate, using this piece as a template. Easier than going in an out of a car. 8-)
The plan is for next weekend to remove the T5 and assoc bits from the donor ute, and replace the rear main seal, and fit the flex plate, so it's all ready for the auto to go in. If time permits, I will make the reinforcing bits and bobs, remove my dash and switch over the pedal boxes, etc, and drive around for a while in an auto ute with a clutch pedal! :?
I have a Valeo clutch on order, thru a local supplier, (and cheaper than Evilbay :D ) just waiting to confirm that the donor is a 6 bolt unit. I will also inspect the flywheel, and if it needs machining I can get that done at work, very cheap. :D
Then, the following weekend, It will be all hands on deck to remove the auto and fit up all the T5 goodies to my ute. :D
Fingers crossed.

Hey Sooty

My recommendation is that if you are getting a new clutch, machine the flywheel, especially if you can get it done on the cheap.

Keep up the good work. It is all worth it in the end.

Cheers

Thanks mate, I think you are right, if the flywheel looks OK, no cracks, etc, I will give it to our machine shop guys here and get it done.

I am getting there slowly, being only able to get to work on it on sundays, and having a 3/4 hour drive each way, is making it take a lot longer then it normally would. But all my spare parts/cars are there, and the hoist too, so it's worth the effort. I'm over laying in the dirt to change gearboxes, hoists rule! 8-)

OK, a quick update. Today I finished removing the T5 and all the assoc goodies from the blue XH
donor ute. Here's a pic after we washed 14 years of crap off the box and parts.
Attachment:
T5-3.jpg

While it was on the hoist I fitted a flexplate back onto the motor, to have it ready for the auto, once I get it out of my ute.
I also removed the RH rear brake caliper, and swapped it for the one on my ute. Mine was sticking on when the handbake was used. All fixed now, a quick bleed, adjust the cables and all good, I have a handbrake that works again.
I took a couple of pics of the numbers on the box, to help ID it for later.

The flywheel looks OK, and it's a 6 bolt styles, so I will take it to work this week and get it machined, and order the Valeo clutch kit.
Next sunday I will remove my dash and pedal box, reinforce and fit the manual pedal box, and basically have everything done inside the car. Then the following sunday the auto comes out and the T5 goes in. Yay. :D

All XG/XH flywheels are 6 bolts.
Gearbox should be later EF/EL - should be an alloy tag with an xxDA-xxxx number on one of the upper extension mounting bolts.
I can't see if there's a 'roofing nail' near the reverse switch.

What's the part no of the valeo kit ???
