Hi all,

I have been out of the drivers seat of a falcon for 6/7 years now, and thought that was long enough. I already had a work vehicle so I hunted around for abit of a project. I found a black 2003 auto XR8. It was listed for $3300 but after cut throat negotiations I managed to get it for $2000.

It's definately rough around the edges but on the plus side it has some nice factory options such as premium sound and leather seats.

Now we come to the bad:
- sagging roof lining
- various interior pieces broken
- burnt exhaust valve
- bonnet and boot clear coat is lifting
- various dents and knocks
- weeping rear main seal

After picking it up last night I have replaced the front rotors and pads with bendix and dba replacements as it was metal on metal....

After going through the car wash 3 times I eventually got all the gravel/clay clumps off from underneath. A mate is going to give it a buff on the weekend and then I will be able to see what is salvageable of the paint work.

So yesterday I slapped some new rotors and pads on. At least there are no scraping/grinding noises when driving now

I will give the transmission a service on the weekend. I'm sure its never been done after 230,XXX kms. Then it will be on to fixing the small interior blemishes and broken pieces..

So yesterday arvo I thought it was time to finally get this XR8 Sorted. Started pulling the boss out at 4pm and by 8.30 she was out. I gave it a wash this morning and bolted her up to the engine stand. I'll post some pics up later as I start to strip it down and find this dirty burnt valve!

I'd just like to keep a record of this for anyone else looking to do the same. It's obviously done many times before but just looking to help anyone else out thats in the same boat.

and some of the tear down. while pulling it down I noticed it has the metal tensioners! And by the looks someone has been inside it before. After pulling the heads off I noticed afew valves completely covered in black soot. I will remove the cams and inspect the heads properly when I get chance.

I had a look at the bores and some appear to be glazed and some have water staining so at the moment I'm tossing up whether to fully rebuild it or get a low km engine for $2k.

so today I measured the bores and they are excessively worn. So as you can see she is stripped down ready for the machine shop. I spent afew hours cleaning up all the surfaces and it came up really well.

See how we go but I might slip some herrod cams in depending on how well the pricing goes with the rest of the build. now comes the tedious chore of cleaning up all the parts. I managed to get some DC casting heads for $600 which have been checked over.

Hi all,

Got the short block built up this week. The heads need some repair work so probably won't have them til the end of next week. Once the heads are back the fun job of timing it up can start..

Did you use new cam sprocket bolts, apparently they are not reusable.
