Hi guys,

this is my 1st time here and have had a look around and cant believe the amount of info on here, this site is awesome.

Im not a complete car freak/genius (like talented others here) so please excuse me if this is a dumb question.

Next year some time I want to convert the car to Gas, I cant do it right now as I need all the boot space (will be a different story half way through next year), as it stands my car has done a head gasket and I was wondering, is there anything I should do or not do during the head gasket process that will help/aid the future gas conversion in some way?
While the mechanic has the motor in bits I may as well get him to do certain things if need be. I've never been down this road before so any advice would be appreciated, cheers,

let's assume the car is an EF/EL I6,

1) MAKE the mechanic use an AU head gasket, or go and buy a JMM one.

2) MAKE the mechanic use NEW head bolts, they are NOT expensive.

If the car is an EL, and you are going to gas, probably the time to put in a new dizzy, depending how far the car has gone.

That's about all at this time.

JMM is an au one with a new price tag.

Au Head gaskets are thinner, (better for gas as the compression will be slightly higher).

AU Gaskets are MLS (multi-layer steel) they're a 3 layer shim, allows the gasket to walk with expansion and (some say) a fix to he E series head problem.

you could try politely asking first, might get you further than starting with the attitude.

Though i don't know of any that would reuse the old bolts anyway. The engines have been blowing head gaskets and breaking head bolts for along time now.

if money allows, maybe get a quick port and polish?

the head is off anyway, may as well let the thing breathe while you get the chance. Deffinately get the BBM cleaned tho. that thing gets so clogged its not funny.

i think the idea is get the Au gasket with the EL bolts.

as for the website, stick around! you think you may have found out a heap about your car? you'll find out even more (paint change, suspension changes mid model, motor compatibility, engine component swap mid make etc.) all very interesting

Maybe I should have said "MAKE SURE.....

The attitude wasn't intended :?

If money allows, get a complete head job, valves, combustion chamber etc. All works well for gas.

awesome, thanks for the replies guys!

Theres no way I would have known about the bolts, im sure he intended on changing them anyway but I'll mention it just the same, no harm.

Seems the AU gasket is the way to go then. Will get that.

Ummm, heres where I show my "slang knowledge " or lack thereof, whats BBM short for?

Im sure once im told I realize and say to myself "of course!" hehe

cheers guys!

hey guys I forgot to ask, are there any good third party head manufacturers or must you buy Ford Genuine? If you cant afford a genuine ford head what other alternatives are there?

Obvioulsy I know there are pro's and con's of not buying the genuine head but surely there would be something half decent available, or am I dreaming?

thanks again!

BBM = Broadband Manifold

Its the intake manifold they introduced in the EF i6 as an improvement over the log style manifold used in the earlier e series falcons (ea-ed)
