The manual for my XR6T says that the transmission is a sealed unit and the oil never needs changing. I find that hard to believe. Any advice or experience on this subject?

why hello again!

I just had mine changed after 100,000km and it was brown as (check my build thread for some phots)! i highly recommend getting the oil, filter and gasket changed. My reverse was slow to engage before the service and now its much quicker. This will also help prolong the life of the box. I got about 4.5L of oil changed by having the pan dropped. To change all the oil would have been rather expensive as they can take up to 12ishL if you include all the stuff in the lines etc (the price of the oil is a bit expensive but not as bad as other car makers)

Cheers

Phil

this is correct, ford dont service the auto, they only open them for repairs ect..
ford expect the trans to last the life of the the car and to be replaced when it fails..

but you can get them serviced.. ford just dont service them..

Thank you both, Phil & Troyman:

My 2004 XR6T has done only 46,000 kms. (I'm saving it as a family heirloom). Should I have the trans oil changed anyway? - or at least checked? I do occasional heavy towing (about 1.6 tonnes).

Can the 'sealed unit' be checked without ripping it apart?

Thanks, Jim. I'll try that. Sounds interesting and even erotic. Will I be able to get my pinky back out again? If not, should I call the fire brigade?

What colour and texture should the transmission oil be, if all is well?

Also (sorry if this sounds ridiculous), but is it possible to SIPHON old or contaminated oil out through the transmission sump plug and then refill - to avoid any messy and/or expensive disassembly?

Why can't Ford just put in a proper dipstick anyway?

if your going to change the fluid, you might aswell drop the sump off the trans and change the filter aswell...

ED 7B000 KTF is the Ford part number for the filter service and costs $54.50.

We change the oil in Autos here in our Utes regularly and occassionally a FULL flush.

my bro (bf xr) was told this, had our mechanic service it and install an external transmission cooler (this bypasses a common problem of the factory one failing and getting water in the trans) install fror about $300. the gearbox is as smooth as now, it has somewhere around the 600 000km mark on it
