Hmm this has been happenin for a while..
After the car is warm and its been driven for a bit and sometimes when your driving along the engine just shuts down..
If i try to restart it, it cranks over but doenst fire..
if i leave it for a couple of minutes to cool down(?) it will start and drive normally again...

I havent had a chance to check anything yet but what could be some possible problems?

These two symptoms may be contributing to the cause;
-Smartlock : when i goto start the car i turn the key and nothing happens, if i
push the handbrake in and out it will start everytime.

-Car will not rev over 4800 in 2nd gaer and over..

What im thinking is maybe the coil is f**k as its not providing enough spark at top end, and its dying while i drive causing the engine to stop??

Im stumped...

IDeas?!?!

yeh, could be the TFI module on the Dizzy, or the coil.

Replace both, its not expensive.

While youre at it, new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor button will make her purr!

it sounds like the bem /smart lock modual is f**k ,cause as you said if you touch the handbreak it starts ,the bem is right above the handbreak ,so it may be worth looking into ,i have a spare one if you need it ,other then that i would check the coil and dizzy first

the faulty smartlock is whats making it not start ... as for when its running, smartlock cant cause any problems for the engin once its started.
as for what monty said, my ed wagon has 2 smartlock BEMs, one above the handbrake and the other on the left side of the glovebox, the one by the glovebox is the main one as i found out as i had to bypass the smartlock to get mine started ..

i'm with waggin on the TFI module, get a new one, and make sure you're not stingy with the thermal grease

when the module in the dizzy in mine went, it was because the bearing in there had failed causing the rotor to smash into stuff. It is probably a better idea to go for a reconditioned distributor assembly. at a mechanic, installation and parts should come in under $200

i agree with the TFI and coil breaking down, also check your spark plug leads also and replace any that are faulty.

My ED wont strat unless i fully depress the handbrake to. the is because it is tugging on the bem wire which is just above it.

Trying pulling the carpet back and free up some tangled wires. See how that goes

THanks.
I changed the coil yesterday.. and found the old one had a bit of arcing at the connection point...
Driving along and it shut down again at 80kmh, i wacked it into neutral and the thing started again... haha. Its done that before, where its just come back on in neutral while im coasting, but only does it rarely.
So im guessing im up for another TFI module hey? Fukn typical.
