i have just bought a 94 ed xr6, 159,000 kays, all original. now i ask you when switching from low beam to high beam, the highs come on but the lows go out. is this normal? i wold have thought that all 4 lights would come on when on high beam. also it it correct, outside lights low beam inside lights high beam. the outsides are also the projectors..

no its not normal..
are you sure its an original ed xr??

there should be a link under the radiator header tank that links the high beam power to a 5 pin low beam relay that powers the low beam relay when the lights are switched from low to high..

first check if the low beam relay has a 5 pin relay? as it may have been replaced with a 4 pin??

i rang ford today and gave them the cars details. they tell me its a genuine ed xr6 but get this it was order with out the quad lights. so i am gussing someone has added them later on. after closer inspection it looks like someone has used the plug from the standard headlights and then run the wires off that to each light. i didnt notice before as it was all taped up and looked very original like. there is a series of wires, Pink/black and pink/white and pink/yellow. pink white is the low, pink black is the high and pink yellow is also high. anyone near narrabri wanna come sort it out with me. i know my X- series like the palm of my hand but not so good with e-series.

still trying to work out these lights today.. i cant seem to be able to get the low to stay on when i have the high on, but i can manage to have them all lit up all the time.. lol. i'll have a look at that relay and see if it is a 5 pin or a 4 pin.. if it is only a 4 pin what can i do other than just fitting a 5 pin relay will i have to rewire anything?

being an ed the wires are there, its just a matter of adding the 5 pin relay and the diode link to the plug under the header tank...

There is only two lights on at a time, When High beams are on, Low beams turn off..
Mate put couple relays on the switch, to haave all four on when high beams are on...

they are definitely meant to light up all of them.
mine didn't, it had a 4 pin relay, swapped to 5 and all good.

you can cheat and bridge the plug with a wire and it will work,
you will find the diod link in fairmont ghia and fairlane aswell..

i will give it a try. i just put in a new 5 pin relay as it had the 4 pin in there, probably because it was running standard lights at some time. i will bridge the plug to test if it does everything it should then find the diode. a friend has a fairmont ghia he is wrecking out so i should be able to find the bits i need. i already pinched the dash for a spare and the seats were identical to mine so i nabbed them too.let you know how it goes in a few

i tried to bridge the plug and all that happened was the high beams came on and stayed on, even with the headlight switch in the off position. maybe the lights are wired wrong? as i said before it looks like someone has taken the original non xr6 headlight plug and used it to wire the headlights but it is all over the shop. if anyone could tell me what colour wire goes from there loom to the headlights i would be greatly appreciative.. and it would make my job alot easier. i have to drive this car to sydney on the weekend to visit my wife in hospital and i dont fancy driving 8-9 hours with only half my headlights working..
