Hey all,
Im looking to replace my EL distributor with an EF coil pack. Does anybody know what kind of work is involved to do this and whether it has any advantages / disadvantage? Cheers

This would involve the complete change over of your Engine Bay and Dash wiring loom, as well as the ECU, and BCM.
IMO, too much work for very little gain. Some would say it is a step backwards, as you won't be able to alter the ignition timing with out a J3 Chip. Cheers BenJ

They went back to distributors in the EL's for a reason. They were crap. At least with a dizzy, you can play with the timing easily.

I can't see how a distributor system is better than a coilpack system.
Ford would have done it simply to cut costs. AU and onwards returned to a coilpack system. If Dizzys were better, I'm sure modern performance cars would be using them. Go and see how many performance/premium cars built in the last 10-15 years have a dizzy. |

Coil packs in EF'S are supposed to cause problems, not many compared to EL dizzy's [Holden's are more reliable].
But having said that it is easier to sell the car & buy an EF than to convert an EL. And only EF & AU had coil packs. BA on have 6 coils. Regards TPVM.

i was going to swap mine from coil pack to dizzy so i could play with the timing (turbo ef) but like BenJ said, its just too much effort. have to swap the loom and ecu over. they changed back to dizzy for the EL because of surplus stock from the early e series... cheap bastards!

I was told by an engineer dude from Ford the reason why they went back to a dizzy in the EL.
Ford had jumped the gun on the EF...for emission standards, hence the coil pack ignition system. So, the EL had a dizzy, and saved them $100 per car to have a dizzy till the required emission spec was required...which was the AU....also, the coil pack in an AU was made by Visteon.....prior to this, Bosch was used for ignition system/parts. I can only assume that Visteon was cheaper than Bosch at the time.

I can only assume that Visteon was cheaper than Bosch at the time. ahh, i heard it off ford techs and some engine tuners.. id imagine a ford engineer would have a sounder knowledge though! this also explains why i heard that ef emissions didn't cut the grade.. i don't understand why though, surely the ecu controlled coil packs would create a better, more efficient tune than a distributor?
