i just had my car in at the mechanic and have been informed that the head gasket needs to be replaced, Right hand front upper control arm bushes needs replacing, front shockers leaking oil and i was wondering whether it would be a good idea to just go to the wrecker to get these parts besides the head gasket as this has happened at the worst time for me and i really dont have the money. Any suggestions would be appreciated as the mechanic has quoted around $2000

Hi.

Are you able to do any of the mechanical work yourself? It is the Labour of the Mechanic that really ups the cost.

Depending on how attached you are to the car, it may well be cheaper to buy another E Series. Or source another engine complete, and swap it in.

How much are the front shocks as supplied by the mechanic? It may be cheaper to source some off Ebay.

If you are near to other members who are mechanically minded, they may be able to assist with some of the repairs.

$2000, is cheap....IF, thats parts & labour.......
A head gasket job ( if done properly ) is anywhere from $1200 to $1800, depending on how much repairing the head needs ( welding up corossion damage ), vacuum check valve seats ( whether to regrind valves & seats)......the list goes on.
