I have constructive input for you.
Fix the car, do it yourself. the damage doesnt look too bad (face value) and if you love it as much as you say you do, you'll fix it, probably better than it was too. Fair enough your man enough to own up to what you did (which it was a stupid thing to do) but I'll give you endless respect more so if it can be repaired & you are mad enough to fix it. We all do those stupid things from time to time, this one caught you out. But fixing it, that would tell me 10x more about the man you are than just letting it go, even if it had to now become a project (this all under the pretence that the damage isn't anything more than what we see face value too much)

Doing it yourself IS really the only option - many years ago it would have cost a couple of thou to have that fixed up by a shop - INCLUDING paint - but nowadays the cost of labour is ridiculous (when even 20-somethings in the shed are making enough to pay for $40000 V8 Commondung and a mortgage...) so even the shops themselves will shy away from anything more than bolt off bolt on repairs.

thats the biggest problem, the good old fashioned hands on craftsmen panel beaters are being replaced with parts fitters, mechanics are going the same way, rather swap parts then recondition.
I don't agree it will ever be the same again, my boxcar wasn't, because deep down everytime i look at it, even today i still see it side swiped by the incompetent mole that changed lanes on me just before tom uglies bridge, it's even more heart braking when it wasn't your fault. at least when it's your fault you know you fuked up, fix it and get on with the job.... having said that i still think it's worth fixing, i just don't agree it will ever be better than before. personal preference i guess. Australias heading in the same direction as Japan (car wise not growing another head  ) disposable cars & panel beaters made redundant. Thats why keeping the old ones going is important.

Fix it, it's not that bad damage wise.
My son wrote off the front of his EA one month into driving, losing it in a roundabout in Bendigo. His was far worse than the damage to your car and I had his basically fixed in a day........and another day to respray all the panels. We bought a complete running car to strip for panels but you could spend a little more at a wreckers and buy just what you need, parts for EA to Ed series are a dime a dozen. Now at least the panel gaps are close to perfect and they line up properly on his now as well. Just depends on how much work you want to do yourself.............. |

i remeber looking at it when you first started posting DAM you car turned me on i had bever seen suck a plain xr that looked so go (eventhough the scorcher bar) it was a mint... loved it the good thing about e series if you kno what your doing they are easy... evey part of them is preetty much interchangerbale which means they easy an cheaper to fix then most... my suggestion is remove the bar an gards an see how the rad support is sitting usually they can be pulled/pushed into place then find a wreck maybe? take its gards an what ever else you might need looking at probs 100-200$ on getting the front nearly howyou want it with out paint then you gotta make the choose of getting another scorcher or just stock with your xr bar... for the tabs take it to a plastic welder they'll fick it fo ryou an usually cheaper then buying another one.... again im gutten to see it happen to you.. i love your car cheers Dan

cheers for everyones help i havent been on in a while, nothings really gotten anywhere yet just been doing a fair bit of overtime to try get the dollars up to fix the ED, thanks for that diagram ea monty your a legend, i havent measured it yet but this will come in very handy im sure.. thanks to everyone elses help i will be giving it my all to get it back on the road.. and The cons, i agree it is/was a very neat ed xr thanks mate.. a guy i no thats a panelbeater is coming to asses the damage on friday and ill go from there.. i am gonna try use my grill, does anyone no if they can plastic weld fibreglass? cos i found the mounting tabs that mount to the rad support and if i can get them put back on i can use it.. and the headlights are the things that worrys me, my headlights are fine but the plastic mounts they sit in are all broken! does anyone no if i can buy these by themselves? and im trying to got onto paul madden about another scorcher bar if anyone can help with that?
and cheers ben daui for those links they helped but i think the bottom took a bit more impact than yours.. well done with your repair though mate looks the goods.. |

No the plastic that holds the lights in is moulded to the EF-EL Grille unfortunately as my mate learnt the hard way after acquiring one of my broken XR grilles for his S1 EB XR8, however the actual lights are the same. You maybe able to glue/plastic weld the plastic if its still intact/split.
