where are the lifter shims? what do they look like and how do i get them out of an= 4.0 ef? cheers

The shims are inside the rocker arms, above where the lifter sits. Its a little flat round spacer type thing with 3 little grooves on one side of it. You can push them out by putting a pin or something into the little hole in the top of the rocker arms. When putting them back in, make sure the side with the 3 grooves, is facing down towards the valve and make sure they clip in properly.
