sounds like the BEM has a dry joint.....

Give it a good slap on the plastic between stearing column and centre consol while trying to start....
Check the plug is not loose on it too....

there is a little hand signal on the cluster, when the ignition is off it should flash slow..
when you turn the ignition on it should go out.. have a look and see what it does, if it flashes fast or stays on there is a smart shield issue..

it could be a fuse in the engine bay, ecu relay or something from the smartshield is not receiving a signal from the ignition or something imobilising the car...

Check your interior light is working, the bem feeds off this check fuses and bulb. If that doesnt work replace the bem.
