working on a el today that wont rev past 3000 rpm. idles sweet rev to 3000 rpm then stops and backfires through intake and exhaust. car is not on gas so i replaced leads cap and rotor button and plugs. problem seemed to go away then came back. check exhaust was not blocked, checked fuel pressure on road test, checked map sensor pipe, checked for fault codes, checked for vacum leaks and timing( yes i know balencers spin and how to put it in diagnos mode).
any help or suggestions would be nice. thanks guys

its not a blocked cat cause i put my old cat on it and ran it straight out the back and bypassed the mufflers. it is an intermittant problem rans s**t most the time then occationly comes good. stuck valves is a possibilitly but dont think i will go that far a this stage.

was going to be the first thing i replace tomorrow. the thing is coils usually just plain outright fail. they dont usally go intermittant. should just put a set of coil packs in it like my ef that would fix it lol.

Well all the solutions here (especially) the sticking valves would likely fix the problem. But on a very off chance, it seems coincidental that it happens at 3,000rpm all the time, which is when the BBM changes. I'm not sure how the BBM could cause this problem, unless its badly damaged for some reason. Maybe unplug the connection to the bbm and see if it makes any difference. Like I said, its a long shot but only takes a minute to check.
