you dont run the car with out a thermostat for everyday driving ...you only take it out to see if it is the thermostat .. and putting an xf thermostat is the correct one for the vechile .. its just used in xf mainly because they are a cooling running thermostat ... every person i know that ownes an eb ed falcon that tow or live where there is a lot of hill use the xf thermostat and 2 where brought from ford in hoppers .. running without a thermostat for a short period will not affect the motor in anyway .. just dont leave it without 1 for tooo long .. as ford in broady and geelong have said that .. "it wont harm the motor IF its only out for a short perid of time , prolong period could cause numorious problems with the heating of the vechile and/or sensors .."its up to mate ..

ok and if the testing and cleaning doesnt work ... more money to spend ... just take it out for 1 hour or so .. and that will give you a good idea of whats going on .. noisy i agree with u mate ... about getting it checked out .. but what if you where to get it checked out and they say thats fine and it continues .. you can put a new thermostat in and it still could contine .. mine is still continueing and dude i honestly dont have the money just yet to keep getting things replaced ..

I have spent $700 odd on the new cooling system 2 weeks ago, now this happens. I put a El engine in 9 months ago because I cracked the head on the old 3.9. that was another $1000 fitted

Rego now due and the thing that cuts the deepest is that this car isnt worth anything and im still putting money into it because I cant afford a new one just yet. Plus moving in with the the girlfriend and nowhere has 2 car spots in melbourne anymore.

Oh well the little brother will have a good platform to continue the work. None of this expensive s**t to fix when he gets it hahahaha

Could be a thermostat or cavitating (not leaking) water pump problem.

Just found at the problem.....welsh plugs...all of them, oh and did I mention also the head gasket :)

Quote for fix the EB - $1500.

Cost of and ED - $2000

Next question:

Is crying over the phone when the mechanic gives you news like that make me any less of a man?

yeah but on an old car you have to cut your losses?

If I can get $1000 trade in I will be as happy as a pig in s**t.

now its just the hunt for a new one.

Im just lost without my car though. So much money, so many fun times and so many fines :)

You've probably heard it all before, but maybe you should look towards upgrading to an EF/EL?

$4000-$5000 these days. If car yards are selling them for that price, you could get one for $1k cheaper privately.

Alternatively, you could try doing what I did. My EF had only just arrived at the car yard and was going for the sticker price of $7000 once all the repairs had been done (this was a year and a half ago). I spoke to the guy and said "Ok - that includes your risk to sell it with the statutary 3 month warranty, how much will you do it for unregistered?"

I know that includes losing $600 on rego, but when he said $5500, I couldn't believe it! All that was wrong with it was the last muffler (disintegrated - replaced with straight through pipe for $15), brake rotors and a few little adjustments.

The yards are willing to do this cause it removes most of the resell risk on their behalf (they sell it unregged for wrecking purposes and can not be held to any warranty). I effectively saved $1300 or so after doing the usual pads, oil change etc etc.

If you can do the same, you could get your hands on something great for a very reasonable price, for maybe $1500 more than you are willing to pay for an ED.

Just had motor in EA rebuilt as was losing coolant and could not find where it was going. Ran OK on all 6 but a bit down on power. Head gasket was leaking and so was heater tap/control under inlet manifold. Only visible from underneath so we didnt find it till motor came out and tap fell to pieces. :( :(

yeah I was looking at getting a newish car..more XR6/BA or something around there.......still don't know as girlfriend is keen on moving in together and her car is perfectly fine and newish 2001 Accent and I also love the little go-kart.

The reason why I am not looking at getting a EF/EL is because most of them around the $5K mark are close to needing the head gasket change. roughly 200,000km

Anyway im going to start looking around this forum and try to dig out some news on XT vs. XR6
