Just had a phone call from one of my mates who wants to buy an EA. After his last car buying experience, i'm going with him to make sure it lasts more than a week this time!

All he said was that it's an EA, no dings, clean interior, doens't clunk through the gears. Doesn't know what year, CPI or MPFI, did EA's come with the 4 speed box or just the 3 speed?

Any info appreciated!

EAs had either 3spd auto, 4spd auto or 5spd manual. They were either CPI or MPFI.
My suggestion.. do not get a 3spd.. and do not get a CPI.
Problems to look for.. anything electrical.. oh and the head's tended to go on them.

The series 1 EA had the three speed auto. From the series 2 onwards (1990 I think) all automatics were the four speed. Multipoint EA's will have an intake manifold that sort of feeds into all six cylinders if you know what I mean. As usual headgaskets are the biggest problems with EA's so check if that's done. If the interior and body is clean chances are it's been well looked after so you're probably reasonably safe. You might be better off going for an EB though, much better car all round and they're cheap as chips these days.

I thought EA-EDs had problems with the head corroding... EF-ELs had the head gasket issues.

Id talk your mate out of an EA - unless he wants an expensive paperweight. Can he spring for an ED - or at least an EB?

EA will probably have shot suspension (due to its age). Go for the mpfi and if he likes it to be fast, definately go the 5-speed manual. problems ive had to fix are: replacing my brake master cylinder, about a gran fixing the suspension, had to replace the rear muffler and at the moment, my gears are slipping really badly and my car overheats now and then. I'm refusing to spend another cent on it till i get my new car as i've realised my repair bills could have amounted to about 4 EA's off ebay. So like was said before, at least go for an EB.

Exactly what i was thinking. Speaking to him again, it's had a new head just put on it, new exhaust, brakes. Don't know anything else. I told him if it's CPI and/or 3spd not to touch it.

Time to go and find out if he's going to listen or not!

Rev the engine in neutral and make sure it'll rev right out to the limiter easy.

If not, the cat maybe stuffed which then would point to possible problems in the ignition and or fuel system.

also check the throttle cable isn't worn through, and check the ball joints and gearbox/diff for leaks.

Dude - EAs are good for the creation of artifical reefs and for hobos to sleep in - There, i said it!. :? Get an EF - they are dirt cheap. Few less beers at the pub and he'll have the dough.

Even Ford was embarrased by the EA.....although there is some consolation in knowing that the VN Crummiedore was an even greater excuse for a vehicle and hasnt held up as well. IMHO.
