Can I bridge the factory FMS amplifier to run my new sub? I'd like to disconnect the rear speakers completely and have the amp running the sub only. A diagram of the output terminals would be appreciated also.

Yes, I know it's a shortcut, but I don't listen to doof-doof stuff at high volume! :)

Thanks, Mike

You probably can, its an Alpine so I cant see why not, though it depends on how many channels and how the amps structured.

If you want to bridge channels 3/4 on a 4 channel amp you simply go from the - of ch 3 to the + of ch 4 (or the other way round - shouldnt make a difference.)

Thanks mate!

The sub volume is quite low (yeah, I know it's probably too much sub for the amp), but do you think that disconnecting the rear speakers and running only the sub will beef it up a bit? There isn't any more bass than the factory free-air sub at the moment.

Does the factory sub install run channels 3 and 4 bridged anyway? It might just be a matter of disconnecting the 2 rears or is there a different bridging method to get the output up a bit more?

Cheers, Mike

Pretty sure 3 and 4 are bridged internally to run the sub

Correct, channels three and four are already bridged from factory.

I thought they might be. In that case you'll have to get a aftermarket amp. You wont need a big expensive one, a 2nd hand one from ebay would probably set you back less than 100 posted for all you need.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The sub just isn't being driven hard enough. Not surprising as the factory sub is 6ohms, the new Pioneer 10 inch 4 ohms.

So, any suggestions on an amp that could replace the factory one? It needs to work with the factory Premium double DIN system. It's my understanding that the amp in the boot only runs the sub and rear speakers. From what I can see, it's just normal RCA jacks connecting it to the head unit. I need another amp that will plug and play. Heck, I'm into home theatre, not this car audio stuff! :)

Mike

Regarding the ohms.
Lower ohms means a lower load presented to the amp which means a higher output.
The amp would be giving the Pioneer a fair bit more power than the original sub becuase of its lower impedance. Percentage wise anyways, the output of the stock amp is pretty low.

Oops, I got it the wrong way around!

The sub is a 10 inch Pioneer in a Jaycar box. So far the factory free air sub was giving me slightly more bass. Maybe because the boot was the enclosure? I can't work out why I'm getting a lower bass output with the new sub. Is there a way to increase the volume from the amp?

Yes, I did switch the leads to check if I was running it out of phase.

Thanks, Mike
