Could someone help me out with this. I'm thinking about putting a V8 in my EA 11 S Wagon. Has a 3.9 MPI at the moment, but would like a bit more grunt for towing ect. What I would like to know is, what would be the best choice of V8, and the easiest to fit, and what sort of money I'm looking at?

Start with an EB.. else you'll have to get the EA engineered.

I'm sure you could pick up an EB with a rooted engine (and straight panels) for $500-$1000 and then begin the project from there.. infact I've got a good straight (and VERY unique) EBII for sale if youre interested, which would suit the criteria perfectly for a V8 conversion.

There are quite a few threads on this subject already, so i wont go into any more detail. Infact theres already been one regarding putting a V8 into an EA..

Cheers

Thanks, but I won't be bying another car. Just wanted a bit more grunt. The wagon I've got is in top condition, and I don't want to get rid of it.

If I were to do it, I would go a carb set up.
thinking it would be too much stuffing around for little gain, dropping in an old HO 5.0l.
A carb set up would be cheaper and easier to get good power out of it, with out wiring and electrical gremlins keeping you off the road.
And keep in mind how legal a V8 into am EA might be.

Can't go Carb due to pollution requirements, and can't go V8.. unless its engineered.

Maybe look at puttnig a few $K toward a low boost turbo setup... its not as silly as it sounds. 4-8psi of inefficient boost on a totally stock setup will give you more than you'd ever get out of a V8.

turbo imo. if waggin thinks turbo then the v8 swap must have been a hassle. but if a v8 is what you want then this may be for you.

wiring will be the biggest headache and a engineering signatory will need to sign it off, but it can be done.

Well, putting a V8 in, including wiring wouldnt be any (much) harder than doing it in EB/ED or even EF/EL, as long as you've got appropriate donor looms. I can just forsee some issues in getting it engineered. Im not so sure if its as simple as just get a signature, or whether driveline/brake/suspension/chassis modificaions are required due to the EA not being designed for such power (omg yes, a massive 165KW!)

I guess you'd be delving into the unknown, maybe talk to some engineers about it first before diving in. The 165's are nuggets, they chew fuel and dont produce too much wow factor. They sound okay, and are definantly smoother and produce much nicer (and more usable) power down where we like it. I just tend to think that the turbo could be a better solution

Thats a point.. EF/EL 4L with a mild cam. Can pick these engines up for around $500-900!

This thread must be odd for some people to read.. myself and Graeme talking someone OUT of a V8 conversion! :P

Thanks for the input guys. After reading all the info, maybe a latter model six might be the go. I'll still talk to a few people in the know about the legals and engineering for the V8, but maybe a later six would be easier. I've got an AU11 S sedan, and it has plenty of grunt, and I've towed the same van back from Melbourne with it, and the temp hardly moved, and had it in fourth gear doing 110 on the freeway. Thanks again for the advise.

yeah, investigate all angles and see which is the most sensible route.

I'm guessing you'd also move to the 4sp auto too.. that helps keeps the revs down on the fwy.

It does have the 4 speed auto, which is good.

Don't bother with trying to fit and engineer a V8.

work a 4.0.
