Hi All,

Hoping this is a minor issue, but I checked the oil the other day and noticed a little bit of smoke coming out of the dipstick tube.

Didn't think much of it, and it is (over)due for a service (almost done 300k), so i figured it'll probably go away after an oil change.

It's going through any oil, well not a noticeable amount anyway. But I'm trying to sell it and some guy who had a look at it reckoned it was a pretty serious thing (but I reckon he was full of s--t and wanted the car for less). It's also doing a rev dance at idle for a few seconds when you pull up to lights or stop, but I'm pretty sure that's an air leak somewhere.

So should I just do the oil/filter change, keep an eye on it and see what happens, or am I in dire trouble and I should get my ride down to a mech asap?

Thanks

300,000kms + dipstick smoke = bad blowby = worn rings = fkt engine = serious problem for potential buyers I'm sorry to say. :(

How much smoke are we talking about? All engines will 'breathe' a certain amount, but if a cloud emerges when the dipstick is removed then you've got problems...

Try a thicker engine oil and a bottle of stop smoke if you are trying to sell the car. ;)

Hi benj78,
What kind of oil do you use?, how often do you change it?, i'd use PENRITE 30,and change it every 5000k's with so many k's on her, see if it's useing or leaking slowly somewhere, if it get's rid of your problem bob's your uncle!!! and with your maf, it proberly need's cleaning with some spray for electric's and let it dry out naturarly, but you will have to pull it apart, if you don't want do that, get a machanic to do it or a friend, sound's like she really need's a service!!!!.
With your maf, if you can't find the proper spray for electrics, try getting a loan of another one and see how that goe's!!.
Also i WOULDN'T put trans fluid in it, it may work, BUT it could also stuff it up completely, that's up to you!!!. :)
Hope this help's,

Cheers Jason. 8-)

Didnt he say he wasnt using much oil at all?

so assuming 10 000 service and only .5L of oil down? wouldnt worn rings chew that alot more quicker

Yeah your right, he wasn't useing much oil, i read it wrong ,it said Its going thru any oil, what it should've said It's not going thru any oil, MY BAD!!!.
And yeah your right with 10 000, that's what i ment to say, NOT 5000, i had 5000 stuck in my head for some reason.
If its not using much oil just give her a oil change/service, and see if that improve's. :)

just borrow a maf of someone if possible and see if it helps the idle

if the compression rings are worn or a few are cracked it doesnt mean the oil rings are not doing there job..

so it still could have low compression or blow by but reasonable oil control..

Cool. Thanks all.

It's def way overdue for a service. Sorry for the confusion too.. I meant it's NOT going through any oil, and there certainly isn't a cloud of smoke. I'll keep my eye on it.

Mine does the same thing and i fix it by using lucas oil stabilizer and shell 20-50, tried a heap of additives and oils but this seems to work good on my windsor.300000+ km also.
If the guy looking at the car knows the motor has done 300000 then he will know the rings are f**k and it needs a freshen up, its common sense.
I get roughly 13.9 litres per hundred km, good for a 300000km donk.

13.9?? cripes, I get 18-19L/100km which is half the reason I'm selling!

WTF??? I know it runs rich coz it reeks of petrol.

Thanks for the advice.. I'll grab that oil and additive on the w/e

Cheers
