hi guy
i am currently replacin the 5lt in my NF fairlane. all the info can be found here
ford-v8-f2/swappin-my-nf-5lt-with-a-second-handy-i-need-a-little-help-t102261.html

I just have a few questions that have got me a little stumped.

have just mounted my engine on an engine crane but it seems a little wobbly? have posted a pic to show how i bolted it on.

Have stripped it down to the block and heads but have found the water jackets have a lot of rubbish in them. does anyone know if the darker stains would be oil from a leak in a gasket?
whats the best way to clean it all out?
how do i clean off the old intake gasket without it all fallin into the motor?

i seem to be having a bit of an issue gettin the power steering pump off the braket. any tips?

thanks guys its comming along i just want to make sure im not missin anythin.

any input appriceated japcrp

The rubbish in the water jackets looks like it'll clean out with a good flush, once the engine is up and running, wouldnt worry about it till then. The engine is mounted to the engine stand properley, but those engine stands are notourious for being crap with balance, especially when they have a 6 cyl or a V8 bolted to them, maybe add some reinforcement at the front? some strong timber should do.

thanks gab
will try to blow as much of it out with the compresser first and give it a good flush. was just a little worried that the deposits were oil.

Doesnt look like it to me, yeah blowing out with compressor is a good idea, even see what you can do with a rag and some WD40, petrol, degreaser etc

Has the engine been sitting for a while? as it looks rusty on the outside too.

You need to remove the pulley off the pump before you can pull the pump off the bracket. I normally just remove them in one piece if need be, as in leave the pump on the bracket and just remove the bracket.

The pics don't look all that bad at all, seen blocks a lot worse. As for the outside, Ford did stop painting engine blocks around the ef when it comes to the 6cyl, did they do that too with the v8? lol.

I have seen people talk about fitting a filter to the top rad hose so any crap left over after a rebuild get's caught in it before it clogs the radiator. Otherwise just flush the block as much as possible, then after its in & running for a bit, remove the radiator & reverse flush it......

Cheers
